TRD Supercharger for 2004 Camry ?

TRD Supercharger for 2004 Camry ?

Postby kultakala » Thu Dec 31, 2009 6:36 am

Hi Guys,

First of all i have to admit that i live in germany and have no experience in tuning cars.
My english lacks a little bit, especially when special terms come into place like here in the forum.
So please excuse that i probably ask questions which are already talked about in several other threads but often i am not shure what the used abbreviations, terms etc. really mean.

A few month ago i bought me a Toyota Camry.
Its from 2004, model XV30, with the 3 litre V6 (1MZ-FE) engine, automatic transmission and it is completely stock.
I would like to add some power, especially for getting better acceleration performance).
The car is used only for daily operation within the city and on country roads.

As far as i found out by now there are simple and cheap things i could do... swap air filter, new spark plugs or something like that but that would not bring any benefit.
And there are expensive solutions like adding a turbocharger or something with heavy modifications.

But then i read about the TRD supercharger which is not available anymore and so i looked at ebay if there are any offers.

The question i would have is... would it be possible to just add the TRD supercharger without any further modifiations to gain some power ?
Without loosing the ability for daily usage and make shure that my local toyota dealer (which services my car) can still handle that ?

And if so... i found this TRD charger at ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140370746174&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

It is a used one for Camry from 97 - 01 with the 1MZ-FE engine.
Would that also fit to my 2004 model ?

Does anyone have another idea where to get a suitable one ?

Thanks in advance!

Olaf

P.S. Happy New Year to all of you!

Hi you guys,

Nice to hear there is a other European member on forum.
I live in the Netherlands and run a S/C TTE Camry from 1998.

I think you have a 3mz-fe and that is not a direct fit for the S/C, because you have a other throttle body. And also i'm not sure if it fit the heads.

So i think a turbo is the most easy route and just as expansive.....after the install of the S/C you also need to tune the CPU.
I think it totally cost you about 4000 Euro......just to have an idea.

@carstenmeiner
You finally get your S/C ....great to hear.
Do you have installed it all ready?
The installation was a hell for me, other vacuum lines etc. but after that it is been great (for 2 years now)

I run safe 4psi because i have no fuel mods and run on LPG/GPL.

Happy New Year to all of you!

@carstenmeiner:

I think the guy that sells the used SC on ebay is the one you mentioned, because his name is gabe.
But he wasnt shure if the charger would fit and suggested to ask here in this forum.

@JvR

I had a camry type VCV10 from 1995 before, it had the 3VZ-FE engine.

But my actual one definitely has the 1MZ-FE engine.
You can see it here on the belt cover:

Btw, this is my car:

If the SC would fit... do i need to tune the cpu then too ?
When possible i would like not to spend more than 3000 Euro...

Can you estimate how much the power/acceleration increased after putting the charger in ?

So, once again... Happy New Year! Which arrives here in about 5 hours.
So i have to leave now... party is waiting :)

Welcome!!! The fellow on eBay is the same Gabe as the Gabe on here. I don't know for sure if the supercharger will fit your car, but I want to say that it will. The 1MZ is the same engine, but I see that your ignition is different, so that makes me wonder what else is different. Keep looking maybe someone knows for sure.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

:o uhhhhhh,

In the Netherlands the 2004 Camry have for sure the 3mz-fe.
So you are a lucky guy, the S/C will fit. :bang:

But don't forget......it will cost you a lot of money at the end. (about 4000euro)
You have to re route the vacuum lines......That is a hell :bleep2: ....i had the same problem because the Camry in Europe has got a other setup then in America)

But,your car looks great!

Looking at your engine bay it appears the charger will work.

Hi JvR
Yeah I've had my S/C for about 6 month now but I haven't installed it yet because I broke my arm shortly after I recieved it.
But the arm is getting better now so it's time to get it installed.
I'm also rebuilding the whole front suspension with Energy bushings and installing my other TRD parts..
Do you have some pics of your S/C project ? I'm thinking about the vacuum line rebuild. Is it difficult ?
I'll start with 4psi of boost and then later upgrade with Walbro fuel pump, Supra 330cc injectors and OBX manifold to 5,5psi

Sorry, i have no pictures of vacuum rebuild. There was also a fitting problem between the "elbow" of the supercharger (I mean the bend after the inlet). There is not enough space for the European smog setup. So i had to drill some holes to reverse the setup to make it sort like fit.

I have the OB for 3 years on the attic  . The coming month it will be installed...i hope it will really improve the driving 8)

some tips:
Before you are going to install, don't forget to drill some holes in the S/C, so you can later on install some lines for turbo meter or meth injection etc.
Also i would replace the spark plugs and wires....because you can easy access. And don't forget to read the manual,so you can check you have all parts.

I have to tell you i'm really jealous about the black color of your car.
In the Netherlands the 3.0L Camry are only available in green/blue or grey..... 2.2L was in only black.
Sometimes i don't understand the way Toyota is thinking about those things.....Dutch people don't like black 3.0L Camry's, but if it has got a 2.2L engine they love black
Same problem is that we can't buy a gen6 here, because the gen5 was really a fiasco here. But they the Hybride cars are a real success here ...so the gen6 Camry would be a great option.
So Toyota Netherlands has to learn a lot.

It´s the same in Germany... they stopped selling the Camry in 2004.
I got one of the last sold cars here... otherwise i would like to have the actual one.
I thought about buying an import but i was not shure about spare part availability, so i did not get one.

The S/C story seems to be more complicate than i thought....

Hmmm... could someone send me a scan of the manual ?
Maybe i can check then if the S/C would fit ?

pm send.

look a 1mzfe=1mzfe, so i will fit.
You only have to work around the EGR setup.

I only thing i want to say it is not job you can do in 3hours, without any problems . (it took me more then 3 days....with some issues)
You have got the last version of the 1mzfe...so there are some lost minor adjustments since the first 1MZ-FE. (ignition, vacuum lines etc. etc.) You have to figure out how to work around that....that will cost a lot of time....but that S/C will work!

Hi JvR,

Thanks! Sent you my email via PM.

I will check with my garage and hear what they say.

Because it would not be a good idea if i would do it by myself... the car should still drive after that ;-)
