Beginnings of a turbo project- a few questions

Beginnings of a turbo project- a few questions

Postby ecms171 » Mon Nov 15, 2010 5:48 pm

When i say beginnings I mean i have been researching this for almost 6 months in my spare time, and i have a huge compendium of links and magazine articles etc, but sometimes its difficult to get the straight forward answers i want.
Before i start anything, Planned mods in order of install:
BRAKES
BBK brake kit with some 12'' rotors
new 18''rims to house them

SUSPENSION
whiteline FSB+RSB
Ultrapro Racing Front upper and lower brace
Kyb strut mounts
munroe gt gas struts
King low springs

ENGINE AND FUEL PREP
Battery Relocate
Return fuel system
Jims fuel line mod
Walbro fuel pump
Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator
Smaller racing radiator or new slim fans dependiing on what happens with the IC
New flywheel and clutch (fidanza)
New knock sensor
New maf sensor
Supra Injectors
New intake camshafts off the 2mz
ECU (I have questions about this)
Cold spark plugs (denso)
Raise rev limiter to 7000/7500 rpm(more questions)

TURBO SETUP
Custom manifold
Intercooler (PWR)
Tapped oil pan
Wastegate (hks?)
Blow off valve (hks?)
New guages (autometer)
Boost controller (greddy?)
Heat sheild
T60 or T3/T4 turbo(not researched, more questions)

UNCOMFIRMED
Meth injection(Pro's/Con's anyone?, still have to research if its legal in my country on the road)

So my questions are...
FMIC sounds great, but how is it done, do we even have room?
Meth injection, now i understand it i think its a great way to ease compression, but how is it mounted? Does it cause any damage?
Does anyone here know about the 2mz camshafts/done the mod/done something similar? (I found out via gabes facebook page)
If i want to lift the rev limit, even that little bit, am i going to need new valve springs?
What ECU do people use, some people on TN have said emanage ultimate, some say AEM, some say SAFCII and even some say emanage blue?
What turbos have people used in the past? Im looking for not too much low end boost as we struggle to lay down the power at stock but obviously too big and i cant spool it properly and it's wasted.
Hksboost has been my big inspiration, as well as DatSRBoi(even though he is SC i like his mod list)
Would limit boost to 8psi, i dont want to have to do forged internals etc.
Hksboost has a T60 but i would have thought it was mostly going to waste at 8psi in our engines.
A lot of you guys have been around the block and seen what others have done, so if you think of something thats not on there let me know.
I'm sorry if I'm bringing this back up again like every other noob, but i have searched and i have learned a lot, but i still have a few questions left...

Thanks for your patience

it's a 1mz in a 99 camry, same engine as the gen 1 solara. Also, exhaust wise i would love to put in jp headers ypipe and catback exhaust but i dont want to spend big money and then cut it up for the turbo. Also, apparently our upper intake manifold is very restrictive, any advice as to what to do about that?

A front mount will fit, you just have to measure and get on that'll fit in there. its been done before. You may lose the foglights though
Meth injection, now i understand it i think its a great way to ease compression, but how is it mounted? Does it cause any damage?
its mounted in the intake pipe before the throttle body after the MAF. Reservoir and pump location is up to you. Meth lowers the chance of detonation and "steam cleans" the combustion chamber
Does anyone here know about the 2mz camshafts/done the mod/done something similar? (I found out via gabes facebook page)
you'd be better off asking him
If i want to lift the rev limit, even that little bit, am i going to need new valve springs?
possibly
What ECU do people use, some people on TN have said emanage ultimate, some say AEM, some say SAFCII and even some say emanage blue?
I've heard bad things about emanange. I have an AEM FIC hooked up, but currently bypassed. I'd go for something with a lil more control than an SAFC. Im sure it can be done, i just wouldn't. Not with a turbo at least
What turbos have people used in the past? Im looking for not too much low end boost as we struggle to lay down the power at stock but obviously too big and i cant spool it properly and it's wasted.
Learn to read compressor maps and go from there. I have to Holset H1C's that need rebuilding. I'd prefer the HX35 (its been done on camry a loonnnnnngggg time ago) IIRC from my research before a t3/t04e 57 or 60 trim should be good for low boost
Hksboost has been my big inspiration, as well as DatSRBoi(even though he is SC i like his mod list)
Would limit boost to 8psi, i dont want to have to do forged internals etc.
its good insurance...boost is addictive
Hksboost has a T60 but i would have thought it was mostly going to waste at 8psi in our engines.

i would add in the suspension section, stiffer motor mounts... especially dogbone and front mount.

the thing i would not do is raising the rev limiter...i'm currently reading the book "maximum boost" and the way i understood what raising the rev limit involves is that there is going to be much more stress on the connecting rods (witch in the 1mz are not extremly solid) i forgot the term they used to describe the additionnalt force but personally i would be less afraid to run 8 psi than only raising my rev limit... but again i can be wrong.... i'm only starting to learn in depth about forced induction ;)

rising rate fpr could be a good idea

i'm currently designing my own supercharger kit out of a eaton m90 and for the piggyback i choosed the AEM FIC because you can play with timing (you cant with a safc2) and i've readed several times that people are having issues with the emanage blue on the 1mz (the emanage ultimate is ok thought)

before going with the supercharger i wanted to do a turbo build and had a t3/t4 .63AR exhaust (forgot the compressor) i was lurking here for nice deals http://www.usedturbos.net/

meth injection cools the intake charge and act as an anti-detonant. if you can afford it i say go for it! more peace of mind imo....

that book is a MUST for any turbo build. Lots of good info in it. I've read it like 4 times haha

From what i read on someones turbo build page the conrods werent too bad. I dont know. I should talk to some MR2 guys who are more likely to have pushed the limiter. I thought it should be okay because I'm only looking for a 15% increase, it would make it a bit more volatile, but if i have the meth in to solve the issue of knock and compression i think the engine should be fine with a really good tune. My dad used to race prolite buggys 10 years ago, but he still has a heap of friends who are in the game and he is hoping that they would have a good suggestion for ecu's. I don't even mind if it's a standalone ecu, and just get rid of the stock one all together. but i was leaniing towards the emanage ultimate.

The momentum will be greater, putting more strain on the conrods, so it may throw a piston through the block. I really hope gabe see's this and comments so i dont have to pm him, i figure he would have a good idea, it's his buisiness to know.

The turbo's i have looked at, after working out flow rates and pressure ratios are
Turbonetics T60-1 or TS04
Garrett-GT2871R 52/56trim
Garrett-GT2876R 56/48trim
Even some of the garrett GT30## line look okay if not slightly too big.
Im still not ridiculousl confident with compressor maps but im getting there.

8 psi definately looks like the safe limit without a built engine.

Also, was thinking about radiators and intercoolers, you could get a long bar radiator and a long bar intercooler and mount them one on top of the other along the stock radiator spot, that could work and the fans could help keep them both cool.

"stiffer motor mounts... especially dogbone and front mount"

Why?
Thanks for the patience

Sure there is plenty room for a front mount just make sure you take measurements before you order one.

Meth injection, now i understand it i think its a great way to ease compression, but how is it mounted? Does it cause any damage?

Meth connection is easy to hook up and very effective. grab a kit.

Does anyone here know about the 2mz camshafts/done the mod/done something similar? (I found out via gabes facebook page)

The 2mz cams are rare and relatively new to the community, people are having a hard time finding them. I have not dynoed these yet but assure you they will work excellent with a turbo.if you can afford, grab a set.

If i want to lift the rev limit, even that little bit, am i going to need new valve springs?

No you can rev to 7000rpms without going with custom valve springs but you will need a standalone EMS to raise the rev limiter. AEM EMS come to mind.

What ECU do people use, some people on TN have said emanage ultimate, some say AEM, some say SAFCII and even some say emanage blue?

The easiest most effective piggyback ecu for a mild turbo setup would be the split second FTC IMHO

What turbos have people used in the past? Im looking for not too much low end boost as we struggle to lay down the power at stock but obviously too big and i cant spool it properly and it's wasted.

A 60-61mm turbo would work well for you. But ultimately its your choice just don't get a cheazy ebay turbo get a precision or something.

Reliable fast and cheap, you can only have two.

I should get myself a copy of that book, and i need to start doing overtime at work to make sure i have plenty of money for this.

I really like the idea of the camshafts, i dont mind if im a guinnea pig for the community.

I just wanted to get my head around everything before i get started and screwed something up.

i suggested stiffer motor mount to help supress future wheel hop.. and my stock engine destroyed the dogbone and front mount...

I had no idea, so the engine being loose in the bay can cause wheel hop, thats interesting, i had no idea.

the car will feel better overall with stiffer mounts... when you'll mash the gas the power will be directly on the ground rather than lost in the mounts. i absolutely loves my custom front mount! i did my dogbone in 60a polyurethane and now i'm going to re-do it in 80a because i can deal with the vibrations...

is there anywhere you can buy replacement mounts? I'm happy to assemble things, but i prefer to outsource when it comes to manufacture, i dont trust myself to do a proper job.

eye8pussies has a thread for 85a's dog bone mounts for sale, best upgrade for you at this point. gabe probably has some for sale. oem mounts for you would be a waste, in a forced induction set up your better off with a stiffer mount! 8 psi should be a safe number, but i would suggest getting a slightly larger turbo, probably the bigger on your wish list, and run it efficiently and if you ever do get your engine rebuilt (which would also be a great idea) then you could in the future run that turbo a little harder without pushing its limits. a good build will go a long long way in any setup, n/a or forced induction.

Took the camry away for a few days, and decided that work starts wednesday (i work weekends) and i want to get the engine out, clean it, new seals etc, rehone the bore etc, just get it up to scratch ready for the turbo. This summer (winter for you guys) I want to get the big labour items out of the way, fuel line upgrades, brakes, shocks and sway bars if i'm lucky.

Going to buy the 85a mount from eye8pussies and hopefully get the fuel mods sorted and purchased from AKORA12's immaculate looking car. Still dont know who else to try for the rest of my engine mounts. I can only really get one or two parts a week because I'm saving for an skiing holiday to japan.

Stringbean: I'm still not ridiculously confident with turbo maps but i would rather the bigger garrett turbos unless i went for the T60 in a ball bearing option.

In regards to ECU's I have decided go for a standalone after reading a realy good article on why piggybacks are limited by the stock ECU. That should give me a better tuning option than any piggyback setup anyway.

In the bad news column, my dad backed into the drivers side quater panel with his 4x4 in the backyard so now i have to get panel work done, but i wasn't sure whether i would go for the sleeper look or not even though i have a duraflex body-kit on the way and now i have decided because if im going to get my panel resprayed after being beaten im sure as hell not letting it get sprayed in the stock colour. I can't stand it (sage green?). Also seeing as ill need at least 17's to house new rotors and calipers and then new shocks and a whole set of new gauges anyway, i doubt it would look very stock anyhow, might as well go the whole nine yards.
