Helpful Hints

Postby JMSinMaryland » Wed Dec 21, 2005 10:20 am

With any car the narrower the better, use this link http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html to see what size you could go with and still find a tire. I.e. you might not be able to find a 16" tire in a 185 but possibly a 195 so change the sidewall aspect to keep your rolling diameter as close to possible to stock. Good luck. Jon. p.s. Ive only liked Yokos and Pirellis.

I have Vredestein WINTRAC XTREME 225/50/17. I had to replace the OEM tires so decided to put winter tires. The only size they had in 17 was the 225/50/17.

I have the Bridgestone Blizzak WS50 studless 215/55-17's that were bought/mounted just before Thanksgiving. I live in Syracuse NY area. So far we have been hit with everything winter can offer...heavy snow, light snow, slick driving conditions, icey conditions, black ice, sleet, freezing rain, etc. These tires and this car have performed beyond anything I would have imagined. I couldn't be more pleased.

Came home after work one day, after 11" snowfall. With plow buildup at end of driveway, you know what that is like. I turned the wheels and drove right through that stuff into the garage without ever slipping, sliding or anything. I am comfortable with this car/tire to go anywhere in winter.

I can't recommend them enough!

I agree completely with Joe. I just had the same tires installed and I'm continually amazed by them.
When in doubt gas it out, brakes just slow you down.

I guess the top and bottom grilles did well in the snow.

Actually, yes. Bottom grille took quite a hit when I went through the buildup, but with about 10mins of work I had it back to original shape...NICE JOB MIKE !!!!

I changed to an all season tire. (Why did my Solara come with a summer tire in Michigan? :o ) I went with 235/50/17 Firestone Firehawk LH. I'm really impressed with the traction during the last several snow storms this year. Here's the tread pattern. It's been great for snow and wet.

BY VREDESTEIN TYRES AND GIUGIARO DESIGN
The new Vredestein WINTRAC XTREME is the first winter tyre that has developed in partnership with Giugiaro Design. Aggressive, firm lines give the W-shaped tread a powerful appeal. Sipe technology was a priority for Vredestein in the design of the WINTRAC XTREME. The straight sipes in the centre of the tyre are angled at 90° to the driving direction, ensuring a maximum grip on snow. The special thinner, zigzagging sipes in the tread shoulders offer an excellent handling performance. Optimum Silica Processing (OSP™) technology is incorporated in the fabrication of the tread compound, enhancing the winter performance and improving grip on wet surfaces. In addition, the equal distribution of pressure across the footprint ensures an even wear pattern, whereby low noise levels are assured throughout the tyre's life-span. With the speed codes H, V and W, WINTRAC XTREME is truly a high-performance winter tyre

Nokian WInter Tires

Postby crazygreek » Tue Jan 03, 2006 11:50 am

I just purchased a set of NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA 2

http://www.nokiantyres.com/passengercar ... ELIITTA+2#

These things are the most amazing winter tires I have ever purchased. They are alittle expensize, but the best tires hands down. Have I was told as long as you use them in the winter, you should get about 5 years out of them.

You can get them with or without at time of purchase. Again, they are a very expensive and high end snow/ice tire. But well worth the price.

This is one heck of a deal. $150 + shipping for a set of 16" steelies & winter tires. Save the rims from winter damage and go this route.
