Can I use OEM muffler tip on a Magnaflow universal muffler?

Postby DriDed » Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:15 pm

I am looking to buy a Magnaflow muffler that is 2.5" IN/ 2.5" OUT (link: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-10416/).

Image
It doesn't come with a muffler tip so can I just have the muffler mechanic remove the muffler tip from the OEM muffler and weld it onto the outlet of the Magnaflow universal muffler?

The OEM muffler tip looks pretty wide but if it won't fit:

Should I buy a muffler tip with a 2.5" diameter or of slightly larger diameter?

Thanks for the response and time.

You should just buy a 2.5 inch tip to go with it.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

That muffler is little more than a perforated resonator it will most likely be fairly loud. -

Thats not the only muffler that I am looking at, I am also looking at this one:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-38414/

and here is the review from one of our own (RDKamikaze who owns 06 2.4L auto):

I always thought that all MagnaFlow creates quieter, deep tone on cars, but I guess I can keep researching.

I am not going for performance with this mod, but I want to make the exhaust tone sweeter to the ears, and the sound that I am looking for is a low, deep tone.

Thanks guys haha.

I would get the TRD if it doesn't cost $400+ new, I can't even find USED on ebay.

I am looking at other Magnaflow mufflers and it looks like there are a lot more choices for me, not so expensive ones.

Thats what I think as well, I was looking at Flowmaster mufflers before I checked out the Magnaflow line then concluded my search that they don't work as well on 4 cylinders.

I have seen the Magnaflow mufflers on the youtube for the Scion TC, they all sound great and not raspy at all and the price of the most expensive muffler doesn't even come close to the price of a brand new TRD muffler for the Gen 2 Solara.

Magnaflow pwns Flowmaster. The construction is top-notch and the sound is wonderful. The prices just seal the deal.

I can sell you a doublewall stainless tip. $30 + shipping.

That resonator you have is not going to be enough muffler volume. It looks like you have a 4-5" round resonator. Use that one to replace your front resonator and go with an 8.5x11 or similar offset / center muffler with a 14" body.

When the muffler shop fits it in, tell them it's OK to weld the muffler in on an angle and then weld the outlet tip on an angle. This will reduce the inlet bend from a restrictive 90 degree bend to around a 75 degree.

Oh yeah, No, you can not use your OE tip. It is press fit onto the exhaust pipe via a set of stamped dimples. The ID of that tip would be too small for what you need.

I remember you selling RDKamikaze a DNX universal muffler (2.5" IN/ 3.5" OUT), do you still sell them and how much?

Thanks for the technical info :D

No more mufflers, just the tips.

Phreakout, which reasonator are you talking about? The picture that I have on the first post of this thread is a picture of a muffler.

Forgive me for being an exhaust noob but what is a front resonator? I thought there is only one and its inside the muffler, isn't it?

If I go with a oval-shaped muffler, what dimension should I go for?

Thanks for the response. :D

EDIT: I looked up another Magnaflow muffler, this one has a 6" inch outside diameter with 2.25 IN/2.25 OUT.
