DIY K&N Apollo

DIY K&N Apollo

Postby ADAMnQuickSOLARA » Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:57 pm

UPDATE: I dont recommend this K&N Apollo because the corrugated tubing kills air flow...live and learn....my new mandrel bent aluminum CAI performs MUCH better.

You can see it here:

http://gen2performance.blogspot.com/

RC-5052AB / RC-5052AS
Additional accessories include a range of stepped adaptors: 70mm – 70mm (part 85-6002), 70mm - 60mm (part 85-6003), and 70mm - 80mm (part 85-6001). A saddle bracket kit (part 85-6004) for easy mounting to your vehicle is also available.

The Apollo is ideal for normally aspired engines up to 250BHP and turbo engines up to 350BHP. It allows for updating your intake system while retaining a closed environment.

While waiting for the K&N to show up I wanted to make the first half of the CAI....here's the Short Ram intake, great sound...LOUD!:
Image

Cold Air Intake: Design #1. I have another idea in mind to eliminate the 90 degree piping bend and I think that may help performance. The CAI sounds great, not as loud as the Short Ram, performance seems equivalent but I will test each to confirm. I will reset the computer and then time each intake on the same stretch of road from 40 to 80 mph.... once the weather clears. I've found that to be a pretty accurate measure since traction is not an issue.

PICS:

Piping with Mass Airflow Sensor Adapter, breather hose adapter and 2 vacuum line adapters:

Yes, it is serviceable, can be cleaned, re-oiled, re-used like any K&N Filter.

Finished Product (sorry so dark):

Thoughts? Opinions?

we'll see how it works out w/o tuning first...

havent researched tuning yet...maybe an apexi afc neo...what, if anything, have people here used?

i've mapped out the plumbing and i'm going to come off the throttle body into the 3" dia. maf adapter pipe (about 6" long), then into a 3" dia short ram pipe (about 10" long)....and then into the K&N apollo (filter end)...the goal is to have the expandable tubing of the apollo start towards the front of the engine bay, away from the heat and then route into the front bumper where it will pick up the cold air....i had the whole intake assembly out already and it looks pretty straight forward....fabricating brackets is going to be the only tough part i think....

It looks coo but I don't like that you can see the opening of the tube and it's all out in the open.

there's no chance of inhaling anything...not only would the closed K&N filter stop it but the picture is deceiving...the tube is actually facing the psgr side of the car, its not facing forward...and its behind the bumper, not in the opening...no way to pick up rocks or rain...you dont even have to make it come around the radiator support if you dont want to...you can have it end in the inner fender or even behind the fog light if you're worried about it...

yea i plan on making a video of the SRI and CAI once it stops snowing (sunday) and the roads are clear...

Once you have the stock intake out, the installation time is about 5 mins for the SRI, and 10 minutes for the CAI and requires only a 10mm wrech and flat head screwdriver.

To switch between SRI and CAI takes about 1 minute.
