UPDATE!!!

Okay, so I WAS going to put JL ZR Components in the front doors when I had a chance, but my local shop shifted to the Boston Acoustics line for both technical and commercial reasons. I have their G-Tuned sub now, and it is real clean... and from what I heard of the components, they are a little bright for some but pretty good...

Took COMPLETE photo set of MIDNIGHT INSTALL in the FRICKIN' COLD last night... and completed the passenger side, door back on and all. I'll be posting details once the other side is in, and I have a chance to process the project into photobucket... maybe later today/tonight?

COMING SOON:

CRISPINSTALLATION of BOSTON ACOUSTICS PRO60SE components...

^^^ I am generally a fan of ANY product that provides the "special" tools needed to do the job correctly... and quickly.

I went through the packaging and accessories... taking mental inventory of what my options were, and which one's appeared to be appropriate for my application. There are MANY different mounting options for these, and a VARIETY of hardware to assist you. There is NOT a plate for 6x9 conversion, but I picked up a basic METRA kit that had the tweeter cut-out along with the round 5-6.5 opening, so I was set! :D

^^^ Set the "jumper" for COMP instead of AXIS configuration...

Image

...and after some feedback on these from others, went with -2db on the tweeter cross... (Faithful readers will recall, I have tri-amped through an OOOLD SKOOL Kenwood 6041 7 band with parametric AND sub control... so I won't have trouble bringing staging back at that setting.

^^^ ...then I got right down to business out in the near freezing and gusty night! (Garage is full of motorcycles and such... :-?

My Memphis 6x9's served me QUITE WELL!!! (Still a great bang-for-buck speaker...)

...I gathered up the parts I would need to do some INDOOR prepping now that I could start trial fitment as I went along...

The "Thomas the Train" table down in the basement shop area was the only "semi-free" space I could locate... so I set up shop right there.

^^^ Decided to SANDWICH the METRA kit (6x9 conversion plate) between two of the BA provided mounting rings, to provide strength and improved fitment with the plastic plate, which is pretty flimsy. Made sure to TRIM the RIB around the perimeter of ONE of the sides of the plate, as the metal rings would have "ridden up" on them and possibly rattled at the gap.

Image
Image

Image

^^^ Separated the tweeters from the "AXIAL" mount, removed the mounts, prepped the conversion plate with one of several BA provided tweeter mounting cups, hot-glue tacked them in place, screwed the woofers into position, and completed a rough seam of hot-glue around much of the perimeter. (After the last shot, I went back and finished touching up the hot-glue job to be a firm seal, until the plastic METRA plate was a DULL THUD when I tapped on it. (After first pass, there was SOME VIBRATION in the assembly... but DEAD afterward. Details that will pay off in the end! ) Also ran a strip of mounting foam around the edge to help them seal snug when installed.

Image

^^^ I PRE-WIRED the cross-over networks BEFORE going out into the COLD, DARK NIGHT! It is MUCH better for this type of work to PREP stuff before you are sitting on cardboard next to the door and rain starts to fall while you are stripping wires! 8)

Image
Image

^^^ Mounted the panel with XTC foam baffle and speakers... then buttoned the entire mount down with some adhesive damping sheet. (Didn't have enough to do the entire door this job... but perhaps later. It's a pretty good mount, even now, I think. No rattles.

Sound Check...

Well... I got it all installed, and dialed in my gains, EQ, and staged for the new speakers. Wow!

I'm driving the BA components with an old (BUT GOOD!) Orion 2125SX that is good for 125x2 clean, and it REALLY lights up these components. The BASS doesn't go "as deep" as the 6x9's, but the ACCURACY throughout the range is substantially better, and the "horning" from the bright Memphis 6x9's is now gone, and MUCH cleaner sonically through the very high end range of the tweeters. MID-bass punch is really solid, and TIGHT, and with the 6x9's dialed in correctly in the back deck, my stage is very strong from the front, and still gives a very good full bodied fill with strong overall bass coming from in front of you, instead of behind. WOOT!

My "weak link" has been the amount of power I have been driving the Boston Acoustic G2 (G-tuned) sub with, (and OLD Pioneer GM-H200) so I pulled a Memphis M-series mono-block from my Pick-up truck and tried it on for size. SHAZAAAAM! Now my clipping is GONE on the strong sub hits when I REALLY crank the volume, and as the front components are driven REALLY HARD, they begin to show just how strong they are from a sonic accuracy standpoint at the higher volumes. Good stuff! Sounds GREAT, but makes me want an even BIGGER sub amp, and possibly the SPZ?555 series BA sub, or a W7 or something...

...I'll have to go back and dicker with the audio shop again now... they have a prior series BA amp or two that I could pick up for a bargain... both a GT-24 and a GT-28. The GT-28 is good for well over 1000watts at 2 ohm from 12vdc, so I'm sure that might be a good fit...

Again, great pics. It looks like it might be a little cold in Ohio.

Also those pics of the MGDs are making me thirsty. I'll have to go find me a couple.

you might consider getting an amp that can run with lots of power at 4ohm and run a 4ohm sub. a 4ohm sub sounds so much tighter and accurate, plus the amp doesnt play as hard ( usually) if you are good with the shop ask to see if u can hear a demo. the difference is shocking.

cheers on the install!

HA HA! Your EARS must have been BURNING!

I went STRAIGHT to the shop after work... now that I am "fixated" on my car audio for a spell again...

They had a couple amps that were being superceeded with some new models, so I started "dickering" again, and walked away with a brand new MEMPHIS MCD 1000 amp for 300 bucks along with an 850 cca supplemental dry cell battery for a little under another buck. I didn't get the dry cell in yet, so hoping the cap would suffice, and just wired the amp in place of the smaller M-series monoblock. I'm driving a 2 ohm dual coil, so the amp is capable a steady 600RMS if really driven. I'm using well under that and still pushing the G2 like it's never x-massed before! REALLY substantial across the system, and ALL my music now has a quality that I only ever hear on my home system, through the Carver and Parasound amp, which is 110 S/N! VERY CLEAN! (Takes less "pushing" of the front component stage to REALLY light up, with the NOTABLY deeper and crisper low frequencies. I cross over very low as a rule, and have the sub just under 60hz with the dash EQ, about 120hz on the amp-side, and the enclosure is tuned 45. Supplements VERY well... but NOW I'm REALLY greedy and plan to twist the shops arm on an SPG 555, which is a BEAST!

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_402 ... D1000.html

This latest add just took my sound quality to a whole new eschelon. I expect to become REALLY greedy, or settle into a more "mature" giddiness while I playplay with the current arrangement for awhile...

...we'll see! (An amp-mount pic when I get to it...)

^^^ Hey, that IS a nice one! (I like the MEMPHIS pretty well, though... and goes down to 1 ohm... although I probably won't ever push 1 ohm! HA!)

PS: I only paid $300 for my MCD 1000! That's pretty good for one of these, I think!

Image

^^^ Not a great shot, but THERE'S the amp in my mount. REALLY impressive in this configuration! Now I REALLY want to go to the SPG 555 BA SUB!

...I'm pretty satisfied, at the moment... 8)

That old-skool Pioneer is now relegated to push the pair of MEMPHIS 6x9's in the rear deck. Does a GREAT JOB of lightening them up, and giving VERY CLEAN back-fill! WOOOOOT!!!

(I'll likely go deaf on the drive to work this morning! Heh heh heh...)

I see the 5db improvement on the Alpine... but it is 25% higher THD to the MEMPHIS, 1% vs 0.75%, so I'd say it's a close call...

If I were going with the Alpine, I'd probably want the PDX series... and use them to stage rather than drive sub... but then again, my REALLLLLY OLD Orion is still kicking some front door component staging ass at the moment! :D

Appreciate the feedback though! Thanks for reading...

Are you gonna be in town for a meet this Spring/Summer so some of us can see this setup in person? Maybe put in some Jonas Brothers and go bumping around the town at 5 miles per hour with the doors wide open sometime?
