Stock unit dead, what to do?

Postby kenneth591 » Wed Nov 14, 2007 8:24 pm

The stock headunit on my 04 Gen2 is dead, the cds are all stucked inside the cd changer. Does anyone know how to fix that?

Or, Should I buy an aftermarket unit? I heard if i get the aftermarket unit, couple speakers (twisters??) will be terminated, is that true? Also, the steering wheel control will not work with the aftermarket unit.

Or, should I just replace it with another used stock unit? I checked the price on ebay, the cheapest deal is like $150.

Thanks for all your help, i am totally know nothing about car stereo.

Get an aftermarket unit; you won't be disappointed; every speaker will still work. About the steering wheel controls, yes and no: Yes, you might lose the controls, but no, you can still get a controller adapter.

As far as those CDs, reenact Office Space and smash the hell out of it until it's freed enough to take out. You'll be much happier  .

fixing the display button wont be an issue, but for audio controls u will need an adapter. (~$60)

you want a PAC SWI-JACKmost likely, but it all depends on what aftermarket headunit you get. They have an interface that will work.

yeah for the 'display' button on the steering wheel just ground the yellow and gray wire to the frame of your car and that will work, but as [sman] stated above you need that damn adapter. Personally I think it's a waste of money for that part but some people like that. But answer to your stereo question, I would shell out some dough and get a aftermarket headunit, trust me you will like it a lot better than stock. Stock sucks! hehe good luck!

what adapter are you guys talking about? I have just ordered Alpine CDE-9874 from crutchfield.com and wondering how will i get the buttons on the steering wheel to work with new unit. Where do i get this adapter?
Thanks

I have a 2004 V6 SE which means i don't even have JBL if that helps. Everything is stock.

Shoot, you could take my old one. Just PM me an offer.

I suggest you find a nice aftermarket one though. Stock sucks on these cars.
