Add satellite radio ?

I have a 2006 OEM JBL nav with XM satellite radio capability.
Would I need a sat antenna added for this? :fadein: After you sign up I mean.

Pearl,

If you don't already have the Sat receiver you might want to wait a bit. Now that the FCC has (finally) approved the XM/Sirius merger chances are pretty good new receivers will be available soon that can utilize signals from both services. The currently available box will only receive one.

Cheers

You will need an entire kit - including the receiver - not just an antenna.

Does this mean the receiver will not support sat? There is a sat button.
the manual says just subscribe. [ Touch-screen DVD navigation sys.
JBL AM/FM CD w/ XM satelite radio capability] . As with everything,
there is always a catch.

There's no real "catch" you just need another piece to make the SAT button work. As mentioned previously you have to purchase a receiver (which includes an antenna). The receiver plugs into the back of your radio and activates the SAT button.

Do a Google search for "Solara Sirius Satellite" to see a long list of vendors and more information.

Something to think about. Satellite radio licenses individual receivers so you'll be paying the $6.50 a month or whatever the subscription is now and can 'only' listen in your car if you purchase a receiver for your Solara. Another option is to purchase a portable Sat receiver that you can move from car to house to work to motorcycle to...pretty much wherever you are.

The "SAT" button only allows the Sat receiver you use (Sirius or XM) to work though your HU. No catch - just gotta buy the hardware man! ;)

Nice thing about a Sirius account is that it will work on any receiver you may have as well as the online streaming music access.

Both services are comparable, but the deciding factor is if you are a sports fan. Check to see which carrier provides your sport. If you are into just music, I'd go Sirius imo, but it is true: the merger might change things so it's your call.

Did you get that in writing?

One thing I learned long ago about car shopping (after being told something by a saleperson that wasn't true) was to research the car(s) you're interested in. At one time that involved collecting brochures. Now, thanks to the Internet, rental car agencies and forums like this you can learn absolutely everything about every trim level and never be surprised.

While at the dealership carry a notepad and write down things the salesperson tells you like "yes, all you need to do is subscribe and that SAT button will start working". From your research you'll know the radio is actually just SAT 'capable' and not SAT 'ready'. When you're ready to start wheeling and dealing have the salesperson sign your notes certifying to what he/she told you. It can add some fun to the process and in this case you'd have probably ended up with the receiver being thrown into the deal. There's always a chance the salesperson will refuse to sign which simply means you shouldn't be dealing with them (or maybe that dealership).

Cheers

Has anyone here actually bought their gen 2 with the receiver installed by the factory/dealer already, not afterwards?

It's possible that he already has the receiver. However, this is unlikely if there is no antenna anywhere. I'm not sure where the "factory" antenna would go, but in the case of an Audi A4 convertible, the antenna is hidden. Is it possible this is the case for the Solara? I have never seen a factory installed SAT Solara before, so I'm not sure what they do with the antenna.

IMO, it's worth the extra to get your car hooked up with a factory connection and buy a separate receiver if you want mobile listening. The 2nd subscription is much less and the sound from a factory installed unit will be better.
