Backup Cameras successfully adapted to work w/Factory Nav

I recently took ownership of a 2006 Solara convertible, and am looking at installing a backup camera. I've ordered a very inexpensive camera (less than $20) off of eBay in the hopes of avoiding spending the $169 lowest price that I've seen on the Eclipse BEC108's (the latest generation of the BEC cameras) since I can't seem to find a used BEC anywhere. I'll see what I can do to get it to work (starting to research pinouts for the HU, etc.), and will fill in more details once I'm successful (i.e., once I either install this puppy (once it arrives) or "upgrade" to the BEC!). I thought it might be useful, though, for those who follow after me/us to get a list of the cameras that have been successfully adapted to work with the factory Nav system. I'll start the list here based on what I've read at SG and other blogs; please add your additional info below.

Thanks!

I used a BEC 105. It was simply a plug and play installation. Very easy. That was a few years ago and everything is still working fine. I kept a sharp watch on Ebay. A used one showed up, snapped it up. It still had the box and everything. I don't recall what I paid, but I know it was less than a $100.

For those following after me, I found the following from OEMValue.com:

Installing an Aftermarket Camera.

First thing first, make sure you have the reverse sensor wire connected correctly. If your reverse sensor wire is not connected, connect it now before proceeding.

Your aftermarket camera should come with appropriate mounting, one video RCA plug, and two wires for power and ground. Some cameras come with the power wire only and the camera is grounded through the mount.

First, you'll need to purchase a shielded video extension plug that reaches from the navigation system to the reverse camera. 20' is usually long enough, you may want to measure. One end of the video plug will connect to the reveres camera, the other end of the video plug will need to be spliced.

Connecting the Video Wire to the Navigation Unit.

Cut the end of the video plug that is to be connected to the Navigation unit. Once it is cut, note that there is a wire in the middle, this is your positive (+), and a wire on the outside, this is your negative (-). Connect the positive (+) to pin #1 on the reverse camera input and the negative (-) to pin #3 on the reverse camera input. Electrical tape the wires so they do not touch each other.

Connecting Power to the Video Camera.

Tap into the wires from your reverse lights, you may need to use a voltage tester to determine which wire is negative and which is positive. Once you know which is which, splice into the wires and tape the taps. Shift your vehicle into reverse, and enjoy the picture.

Note: If you do not receive a picture, ensure ALL of your taps are correct. Some of our customers report that they needed to reset the memory of the Navigation system through the diagnostics menu in order for the Navigation unit to recognize the camera.

Pin diagram of the 4-pin reverse camera input on the rear of the Navigation unit. Input is located on the right side of the Navigation unit. Should be the only 4-Pin input. Input "G"

Here is my home-made version of the pin-out for Input "G":
Code: Select all
----------------------------------------------------------
| Pin 2                    | Pin 1                       |
| Low voltage power for    | Video signal +              |
| certain cameras (OEM)    |                             |
| (NOTE: NOT 12V)          |                             |
----------------------------------------------------------
| Pin 4                    | Pin 3                       |
| Low voltage ground for   | Video signal -              |

JimGo,

You indicated that some customers had to reset the memory of the Navigation system through the diagnostics menu in order for the Navigation unit to recognize the camera. Do you have or can you direct me to the details on how to reset the system? I tried everything and I even found how to enter into the Nav memory, but still could not get the camera to work on the JBL E7001 (04 Solara).

I have the JBL E7001 Nav system in a 2004 Solara. Bought the ECLIPSE UC100 UNIVERSAL REAR-VIEW CAMERA PLUG, but no picture.
Tried everything to reset the Nav to recognize the camera. Even found some instructions, but didn't work. Any step by step instructions for resetting the memory of the Navigation system through the diagnostics menu in order for the Navigation unit to recognize the camera? The words "check the surrounding area" shows on the screen when in reverse, but that's it. Any recommendations before I purchase the Eclipse BEC-108?
