I think so (?). Try placing the detector high on the windshield with the suction cup mount to see if it will obstruct your view; I bet routing the cable should work just the same in the gen 1.

I was planning to drill a small hole in the back of the console box where the 12V outlet is located. Then I should be able to feed the wire from the outlet, under the dash, under the mouldings, etc. to the radar detector. This way the detector will go on with the ignition without messing with the fuse box, and without worring about finding a ground. Has anyone done this?

I did not for the radar detector, but for my navigation.
I made a small hole on console box, and feed the wire from there.

only down side is that i cannot connect my cellphone charger there anymore...

another thing you can do is to use after market lighter socket.
splice the wire behind and connect to it behind the console box. in this way, you don't have to drill a hole on the box.

With a socket adapter (about $5) you can plug two items into the one 12V outlet. The radar detector draws very little power.

you dont need to drill. at the top of the console box, there are already plenty of holes to put the wire/s you need. i used those for the phone jack to connect to my ipod. i hardwire my valentine one directly to the wire feeding the 12v outlet. as for the ground, there's one near the switch for your hand brake...

I never saw any holes in that compartment, so I drilled one for the antenna to my sirius receiver. No biggie, you can't see it from the front.

I was thinking about the same thing.. mine didn't have any holes on my center console box..
i cut a small hole, and you can't see it unless you stick your head down there..

maybe some changes for newer models??

No holes that I can find in my 06 SLE convertible. I drilled a small hole to feed the wire - no biggie.
