pre '97 MAF to '97 & newer MAF conversion?

Postby V6Celi » Thu May 28, 2009 8:50 pm

I have a '95 Avalon ECU and MAF sensor in my car and it has the pre ’97 MAF sensor integrated into a piece of tube that plugs into the air filter box and is very restrictive. I want to switch to the ’97 and newer “standalone” MAF sensor so I can put it into a larger tube, but there is 1 pin different between the 2 MAF sensors. I was wandering if anyone has figured a (inexpensive) way to convert to the newer MAF sensor?

The pin difference is the ’95 has an “VG-” and the ’97 and new has a “E2G“. I have an ’02 MAF that I already tried connecting to my ECU and the car would start but not stay running. I haven’t compared all the pins from my ECU to a ’97 yet, but really don’t want to buy a different ECU unless I have to.

Thanks

Unless your pushing a decent bit over stock power, your not going to gain anything.

Thanks for the reply. I'd still like to try, unless someone has some dyno pulls or time slip comparisons showing that they are the same. My thoughts are that putting a "standalone" MAF sensor in a bigger pipe is going to allow the engine to breath better and make a little more power. It seems to be a very populate swap to use a bigger intake tube like one from Injen. It seems like an expensive swap to do for no improvement.
