98 camry. man. trans. 4 cylinder.

coming home to los angeles from oakland on the 101. passing oxnard (going up that big hill just before thousand oaks.) no acceleration as i was going up the hill so i changed lanes so that faster cars can pass. i down shifted and still no gain. i looked at my console and noticed i was overheating. i pull over immediately and open the hood. let the engine cool then tried to restart the car. the engine turned over but now it idles REALLY hard. i called AAA and they towed my to a gas station. i added some water / motor oil. tried starting it again. still idles really rough. no steam/smoke from tail pipe. no steam/smoke from engine.

please advise your thoughts/comments/help.
thanks, gary

hmm...

what mileage are you at?

maybe your water pump froze, so it can't recycle the coolant.

when was your water pump changed?

sounds like the water pump is the bug. w/o the fluid recirculating throughout the engine, it can cause to overheat and cause extra strain on the crank/belts.

thanks for the input. i'll keep that in mind. but they keep insisting that it might be the head gasket.

it could be the waterpump that caused the head gasket to blow. Check your coolant to see if there is any oil in it or if it has changed color other than red. sounds like your gonna need some major engine work done though...maybe good time for a 3sgte swap? just a sug.

kingkong: best if u just swap a lower milage 5sfe on ur car. Since u already have the high milage...just get a used engine..and work from there...BTW: search here and read on the s/c for the 5s motor! Good luck!
