2002 Solara throttle position sensor switch

Postby robinete30 » Mon Jun 20, 2011 9:22 pm

Hi, I have a 2002 with about 140k that is not idling correctly ( shuts off if you let off of gas in or out of gear ). I took it to mechanic and he called me after scanning it and said it was this sensor that was bad. I think he is right but he said this year Solara has a unique design and the sensor would cost $950.00. Does this sound right? I see the sensor being sold for around $60.00. Am I missing something?

Get a breakdown. Most of that is probably labor. See what he's charging for the sensor and how much for getting it swapped. Not sure about the the TPS on Solara but in a previous car I worked on it took a bit to dig out. But your symptoms seem pretty generic for jumping right to that conclusion. Did he test anything else first or did he get that off the ECU readings? I mean that could be a $7 fuel filter that needs changing.

It only stalls when you're decelerating, right? Not when you're accelerating, driving constant, or at idle?

Spark plugs?
You figured out the tps already
idle air control valve?
idle speed actuator/solenoid?

if you have the 4cyl.(2az-fe) it sounds about right. the throttle position sensor is incorperated with the throttle body itself. You can find used throttle bodies on ebay for around $150- $200. If you get it new from toyota its over $800
