Passenger Axle Replacement

Re: Passenger Axle Replacement

No problem I rented a set of big sockets. So far having trouble getting the three bolts loose on the bottom of the control arm. Think I might undo the bolts to the strut so I can try to lower the control arm that way and slide the end of the axle off the hub. Otherwise if that doesn't work it's time to finally buy a compressor. Just worried those three bolts breaking on the control arm because that's the way I think they are going to go. If so I am probably screwed cause I'll have to get a new control arm or something.

Dont bother removing those bolts take out the two strut bolts move the strust out of the way pull the control arm down until u can get the axle out from the hub.

Yep thats the plan. I really dont want to have to deal with a broken bolt on the control arm as I don't want to have to deal with taking that out and have to pay for a new one. I think a impact gun will just break those bolts. Attempt number two starts tonight after work!

Well got that part now off the hub, but now i can't get the axle to slide out. I think it's hung up on the center bearing that supports the inboard drive shaft. The bearing just won't slide out of the housing. I removed the snap ring and bearing lock bolt. I've try to pry it off with a pry bar and heat up the housing with a blow torch and I can't get it to budge. This the last step and it's out. Any tips on how you got it out?

Finally got the new axle in. I never expected this to be so hard. We couldn't even get the axle out by un hooking the engine mount. We had to cut it in half between the bearing and tranny. We couldn't even knock it out with a 10 lb hammer with it out of the car until we heated it up. There was no way that axle was coming out with it in the car. I hope I never have to replace this again... Now I just have to fix a bad exhaust leak from when I unhooked the exhaust system. Didn't have the gaskets at 4am.

Defiantely did. This was probably the biggest problem job I had to do on this car. Exhaust leak fixed too. By the way autozone, advanced autoparts, napa, and oreilly auto parts don't carry the right gaskets for solara exhaust flanges. Found out the hard way going to every place. The Toyota dealership took care of me.

I didn't need the header gasket. I needed the gasket between the Y-Pipe and headers which are round. They just didn't carry the right ones?
