AC Pulley Not Turning

Postby hang3xc » Mon Oct 15, 2012 9:41 pm

My wife's 99 Solara SLE shifter cable broke. I didn't get on it right away because the day after it broke we were in the emergency room, then 2 days later at a Mass General Boston oncology specialists office. Then she had major surgery & I had to take care of her for a month. Anyway, the car was the least of my problems for about 6-8 weeks. Amazing how things you thought were problems (money, bills, repairs, bills, money) mean absolutely NOTHING in an instant when your health, or the health of the most important person in the world to you, is compromised

Anyway, when the tranny shifter cable broke, nothing else was wrong with the car. It was running perfectly (cuz I had just fixed a handful of things that needed fixin')

Today I finally replaced the shifter cable and got the car all buttoned up. When I started it though, the alternator belt started screeching... loud, and it didn't go away. I shut the car off, looked under the hood and the belt was smoking. I had just replaced the alternator 2 months prior, so it most likely wasn't that. I figured it was the ac compressor even though it was working perfectly the very last time the car was started.

I removed the belt and found the AC pulley doesn't turn at all with AC on or off... but, the pressure plate (?) turns freely. By pressure plate, I mean the round thing inside or in front of the pulley. I'm thinking that by not using it for so long, the pulley (rotor) got bound to the stator ??? I was thinking I could put a strap wrench on it and break it free?

The AC worked FINE the very last time the car started, when the shifter cable broke. Then it sat for 6-8 weeks outside, and now the pulley wont turn, although the pressure plate (?) spins freely, which I'm figuring is connected to the shaft of the compressor, which makes me think the compressor is turning freely too, which makes me think I can break the pulley free and not need a compressor... or at most, need just a new clutch???? BUT I'M JUST GUESSING

Thanks for any help

To answer my own question, I was right. The pulley/rotor froze to the stator. I probably could've stuck a wire wheel in my drill press and cleaned up the inside of the pulley. The bearing was in great shape and the compressor shaft turned freely, so it could've been fixed and reinstalled, costing nothing more than to recharge the system with refrigerant. Could've been... except when trying to get the pulley off, the area where the first snap ring groove is, broke. Now it's useless. Time to get another unit. I guess it was due

In the last year I have put on a new timing belt, water pump, fuel injector, front & rear sway bar bushings, control arms, ball joints, alternator, interior door handles, passenger door lock and latch cables, the entire exhaust, blinker/headlight switch, shifter cable, and now the AC compressor.

That's in addition to maintenance items, including rotors, drums, pads, shoes, windshield wipers, oil change, belts & battery, air filter, and front tires.

Eery time I think I should get another car I think "But I've practically rebuilt this one. It should be good for a long time"... then something else breaks... *$#@&#! !!!
