Performance chip

Hey guys, I haven't been on in a while, but I have a quick question for all of you. A couple of my friends purchased a performance chip, and swear that it does increase power, or just performance in general. One of them is a Celica GT, and the other is an old 96 Sierra. Has anyone installed & dyno'd to see a difference? I'm asking before I purchase because it's not the cheapest "upgrade". I just want to know if they increase performance for real! I own a 2000 Solara SLE V6 vert. Thanks for your time 8)

There's a reason why none of the fast cars here have "chips"

I wouldn't bother with any of the ebay junk supposed chips..

and this is just my experience..

But i have an ECU fitted that i got chipped by JET PERFORMANCE in california,
I'm running a TRD S/C @ 4psi, CAI, Ported TB, Headers & 3" Exhaust, i ran with the stock ecu to start with and found that my camry was running a little rough and rich,
after fitting the Chipped ECU i noticed a slight decrease in power on take-off but a huge increase over the rest of the power band, engine smoothed out especially noticed a better idle and better fuel consumption and i run only 98octane.

i hunted on-line and managed to get it for about $300usd+shipping back and forth, about a total of say $500...
For me that's was 1/4 the cost of getting an aftermarket ecu programmed locally..

Oh and i've got a '01 Camry Touring V6 1mz-fe

98 Octane
If i run 91 my car starts to choke, rough idle, power surge, etc..so i no like to use..:) for $5 extra a tank i'll go with smooth running, instant response and better mileage..lol

In Oz we get a choice of the following fuels:
91 Octane = standard cheaper grade,
95 Octane = mid level
98 Octane = Premium fuel(normally with added cleaners)
there are also a few other occasional odd ones eg. racing mixtures or enviro High ethanol blends(not generally good for a petrol engine) and we haven't had lead in our fuel since about 2000..

If you wanna learn a little about petrol this is a good read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Rough current price of about $1.60 for a litre of BP 98premium..tank is anywhere from $80-100..

What do you guys get for a choice??

our octane ratings aren't the same as other parts of the world. When I was in Greece, their 95 was equivalent to our 91
