dbanker wrote:Thanks for posting those pics Flipside. I like how those MR7s look. I'm just trying to decide to go with those or the Tantrums. They both look great. I may be leaning towards the Tantrums though.....is it just me or do these two wheels pretty much look identical??? I've seen the MR7s on several Solara's but haven't gotten to see the Tantrums on a Solara.

Do you all think that the Tantrums weighing 5 lbs. less than the MR7s would make any difference?

These wheels are knockoffs of the real Advan Model 7's. The tantrums have been out longer than the MR7's. The reason I picked the MR7's was that the Tantrum was only available in silver. The reason why you see the Motegi line of wheels at Pep Boys is because the parent company is American Racing out of Rancho Dominguez,CA (here in SoCal). As for Konig and Motegi, build quality is both on par. In my books, both companies produce cheap rim copies of other original wheel designs and all have them manufactured in China. The MR7's have a 10 hole (dual lug pattern) 5x100 and 5x114.3mm design or 4x100 and 4x114.3. The Tantrums are just strictly 5 or 4 lug. Either way, both rims look great and they will always be an Advan Model 7 copy. It's just a matter of if you want Silver, Gunmetal or even White. If you wanna see 18" tantrums on a Solara...go to Camryman.org...and hit the PASTTIMES link and search through the Solara gallery. Rookie Solara is the guy you are looking for. He has a Black Sand Pearl Solara. He's had those rims for quite some time now.

Ryan,

Those gunmetal rims look fantastic on your friend's Corolla. The color is a nice match.

Ryan, thanks for giving me that link. I never would have looked there.

They are a great looking wheel. I actually saw the Advan Model 7's when I was looking around but the price!!! I'd love to go with them but just can't. Those Tantrum's look great on the Solara though. I'm thinking silver will probably look best with my black Solara.

I just want to make sure...18X7.5 114.3 is the size I'm looking for, correct? Also, should I go with 4 or 5 lug? For reference, the tires I'm getting with them are Yokohama AVS ES100 (225/40/18)

You will have to have the proper offset. I think that 42 is perfect, but 40 will probably work, as well. You'll need a 5 lug wheel.

Yeah I just realized after I wrote that post that I need a 5-lug wheel

As for the offset, I just checked and I think the wheel I'm looking for (18 x 7.5) only has a 35 or 45 offset. But the 18 x 8 has a 40 offset. Does this sound right or am I looking in the wrong direction?

Swell idea :D

Allright- I just looked it up and the recommended offset for all Solara models is 40-42. The only problem is the Tantrum's I want (18 x 7.5) only come in either 35 or 45 offset. Can I get away with a 45 offset? The only way I can get a 40 offset in an '18 Tantrum wheel is to go with a 18 x 8 which will be to wide.

yeah, they compliment his car much better than on mine. Here's another pic of his car with the new JDM style lights:

You might be able to get away with the 8" wheel, but be prepared to get some tire rubbing on the inside of your fender when you hit a bump or take a hard corner. If you look inside the fender walls, you'll see a small lip, which is what the tires will be hitting. You can have those rolled up, or even shaved off, which should eliminate the problem. I'm not sure if the 8" width will cause any other problems. You might try the Search function, or just start another thread, to see who might be running 18x8's, and what problems they encountered.

Yeah I'd like to stick with a 7.5 width wheel if I can. I really don't want to alter the fender if I don't have to. The thing is I've looked at several 18 x 7.5 wheels, including Konig Verdict and Konig Tantrum's (which several people have), and they only come in a 35 or 45 offset.

So can I get a 18 x 7.5 wheel with a 45 offset? Based on what other people are using here must be doing this, either that or running a 35 offset which I doubt. JMSinMaryland has the 18' Verdicts, though I don't know if he's rolled off is fenders or not. I just can't imagine a 3mm offset difference making that big of a difference...I could be wrong though.

What I have

Postby JMSinMaryland » Wed Jan 15, 2003 10:22 pm

I have the 18"x7.5 w/45 offset with 225/40 18. Never rubbing. Perfect fit and look. No fender bending. Perfect. Find a rim you like with this combination and you'll be all set. No reason to hassle with a 18x8 or larger if the tire doesn't require it. 7.5 is perfect for 225mm. Some 19s come in 7.5 also. Jon. 5x114.3.

Thanks for the response JMSinMaryland. I figured that going with a 45 offset wouldn't be a problem. I checked and there isn't a single Konig 18 x 7.5 wheel that comes with a 40 offset. I haven't looked too much into other wheel manufacturer's though. Glad to hear it works though...cause I'd really like to go with Konig's.

Or you can just get Konig with 45mm, then get 5mm wheel spacers.
That will get you 40mm.

The 45 offset won't cause a tire rubbing problem because the tire will be farther in than with a 40-42 offset. The only potential problem might be strut clearance. However, it sounds like JMS isn't having a problem with that, so I guess you're good to go.
