CASTRO wrote:^ it is correct what Dats said, but if you really wanted to get it in gear, rev-match by blipping the throttle and te synchros should let you pop it in gear. Its harder to do and more sensitive on fwd cars, but in rwd cars, its a common practice for slowing down/breaking the rear end loose in drifting.

m... i though u shouldn't downshift to 1st g until u at least near stop(i won't do more than 5mph, just use your 2nd g and put more gas)... it'll eat up your clutch or tran. faster if u keep doing it...

Yeah Ive been playing with downshifting lately. I make sure my car is at a complete stop and it slides right in. If im rolling and need to get in gear Ive been putting it in second. As you should you get a little slower acceleration going back to second, but it can still pull pretty good either way. It seems like our cars really have no first gear at all and all the ratios seem pretty close together. One thing I hate is that when in the crusing gear (5th) and im driving like 75 to 80mph the rpms are almost to 3k. I wish toyota would have change the ratio so we would be at 2500rpm at those speeds.

In any event, every manual I have ever driven, from Toyota, to Porsche, to VW, etc., are all difficult to put into first gear if your rpms are up.

you are exactly right. there is NO reason to downshift into first. anyways, it is bad for your syncros

I never downshift into 1st it is not something that sounds good on any engine, i highly doubt it is any good, 2nd i loose enough speed that i just use brakes after that.

thats my 2 cents

Not to beat a dead horse, but you should never downshift to first and let the clutch out. You should only shift to first if your stopped or going under 10mph (clutch stays in). I usually put a car into first right before I come to a stop because I'm always in a rush...that way I'm ready to go when the light turns green or traffic clears....Drive any stick and you'll find the same thing...definitely not an issue with your car
just my 2cents

Just two things i wanted to add.

Why I downshit into 1st:

When I aproach a gate to enter parking lot at my school, I have to swipe my card so i have to come to a complete stop. Then i wanna take off as soon as gate starts opening, so I would prefer to be in first before I stop to swipe my card. OR When trafic light turns green and you are rolling 10-15 mph it's hard to take off in the 2nd gear.

How I downshift into 1st:
I used to rev match it, but it does not really work too well, if at all. But double clutching solves the problem. Just let the clutch out in neutral and rev-match and then crap into first (sometimes you dont even have to press cluch for the second time, it just slides into first)
