My New Rims and Tires

My New Rims and Tires

Postby Solorange » Mon Mar 27, 2006 6:13 pm

So I put my 18's on yesterday. It looks pretty sweet I might add, but anyway I think i may need to roll my rear fenders. I hit a few humps in the road today that caused my tire to rub on the driver side fender. Whats weird is it never rubbed on the passenger side. So that also makes me think that maybe I need to get an alignment. Im hoping they can pull that side in a bit with a new alignment. Also I feel a little tugging everyonce in while to the right sometimes and to the left sometimes. The steering wheel feels a little loose too. So thats the other reason why I think I need an alginment. Although, I didnt think I would need an alignment by just swapping rims and tires. Do you guys agree that these problems will be solved with an alignment. I just had one done last august when I lowered my car. As far as the rubbing issue if the alignment doesnt fix that, then I have no problem rolling that one fender. I know you guys are wanting to see pictures too. I will probably snap some shots in about a half an hour. The pictures may not be that good though cause its dark out but hopefully the flash will solve that. Thanks in advance for your help! ~ Chris

I tried, the my friends camera wasnt working for some reason. I would take the picture but it wouldnt save it to the memory card. Then it started to rain. My gf will be over thursday, with her camera so I will get some up then. Sorry.

But can anybody answer my questions about wheather I need a alignment after putting new wheels on? This is the first time ive put new rims on a car and I dont know if its required to realign everything. And if thats not the issue, what could be other alternative problems. Thanks!

And ill get pictures up as soon as I can.

Hmm, have your wheels already been balanced and what not with the tires on?

You need to re-align after drop, not wheels.

Thats what I was thinking too.

I just talked to my buddy Joe who has bought several rims for his nissan 240 and has graduated from wyotech, and he told me that im probably just feeling the road more cause of the low profile tire. He was saying since the tires are harder, flatter, and has more surface area touching the road. I can feel the imperfections in the road more. I just feel like i have less control of the car. Sometimes I can feel the car pull more in either direction and the steering wheel seems to have a little more play. For all you guys with bigger rims and wider tires do you feel this too? Is this normal? Or possibly am I just feeling better road response due to the wider tires and that Im just not use to it yet? Joe also told me that new wheels wouldnt change the alignment, but the if car feels really different, that it wouldnt hurt to get another alignment.

the only thing i can think of is the tire pressure being a bit off in one or more of the tires.... i'd atleast check it. good luck, cant wait for the pix!

You rub most often based on Offset and width, not diameter.

If you are on 8" wide, you may bearly rub the fender well lip with +35. Theres no good way to increase offset, so you will have to shave/roll the fender if you keep rubbing.

Rubbing on just one side could be due to alot, down to slight manufacturing deviation on the wheels/tires, or even some crust on the lugs.

yeah, i have to roll my rear fenders before i put my 18's back on...when I had the falken ziex 225/40/18's, i had no rubbing because they had a narrower tread print...but those tires were the worst tires i have ever had, so the tire shop replaced them and gave me a better deal on some kuhmo ecsta asx's...same 225/40/18 size and better tread design and rating...plus they did a bunch of wheel work for free...but they rub now on the outside of the tire on any bumps due to the wider treads. I will be rolling those rear fenders soon.
