I clear coated mine. But I wanted mine shiny and I used black enamel. I cant remember what grit i used for sandpaper, but I used a rougher grit to get rid of the chrome, then a midgrad grit to get rid of some of the deep scratches, then like 1000+ grit (type of sand paper for wet sanding) I also used self etching primer after I sanded it to fill in anything I missed. You may want to sand in between primer coats very lightly to get rid of some of the roughness. Then sprayed like 4 thin coats of paint and 3 thin coats of clear. It turned out better than I thought it would being spray paint. Good luck to ya.

Use rustoleum paint. I had mine metalic black once with no problems. If you want the gloss look just get the gloss paint and forget about flat black.
