Rust

Hi. i'm new to this forum, so i've done some searching but have not quite found anything like this.

I recently purchased a 2002 se. I am not very mechanically inclined but it looked good so i brought it to my mechanic who said it was in great condition. i saw it on the lift and there was some rust but not terrible--same with under the hood, it did look a little rusty for a 5 year old car but i knew the previous owner lived near the beach and since the mechanic said it was good i bought it.

Well, last week i was hooking up my ipod connection and subwoofer and while i was searching for a spot to run power through the firewall i noticed rust all over the place--even on the metal plate in back of the stereo!

Now i'm worried. Should i throw the car in trash? cry?

Any thoughts?

What parts of the car have rust on them? In many cases, it is normal to have some rust. The exhaust for example, is stainless steel but will have some surface rust appear on the pipes. The flanges on the other hand are low carbon steel which will develop scales of rust. The rust will take a VERY long time to corrode through.

Feel free to post up some pics of it.

Thanks. I'll take some photos.

The original owner was from Rockaway beach, NY.

Carfax was ok, and no other signs of flooding.

Strangely there seems to be a lot of rust around various metal between the dash and the engine bay, like the metal plate behind the stereo, which seemed so strange. i only noticed because i spent an hour looking all around the firewall for a place to run power to an amp.

On the lift the undercarriage looked about as rusty as i would expect a northeast 5 year old car to look. a few spots but not terrible.
