TRD Body Kit Separation

TRD Body Kit Separation

Postby xSolarax » Fri Aug 10, 2007 3:57 pm

So I just recently installed my body kit on the car, and within a week there is separation on the side skirts close to the rear wheels and on the front valances around the corners. The shop where I got it painted put adhesive tape on for me, so I'm thinking maybe they used cheap tape?? I have the kit bolted in, adding my own holes just to make a little more secure. Has anyone ever had this problem or is my conclusion about the tape the shop used actually the problem?

what kinda tape they use? should be the red 3M tape u see at Autozone or something.

question though:
when you bought the kit does it come with the screws you need?
and do they bolt right up to the stock mudflaps and such?
and for the rear, where do you bold it on? Or do you have to drill in self tapping screws for that and the rear center piece?

let me know, thanks.

The tape was not red, I believe it was black. The kit didn't come with any screws, it was from a member on the forum WTF?? actually, but I just used the bolts that were from the mud guards. I bolted them up those mounting points, then for my own insurance I drilled a few holes so that puppy is on there secure, and now its just flexing out, looks like ass.... as far as the rear section, I used the spot where the plastic screws were and then again I drilled a few small holes to secure it.

so you put the kit on yourself? did you clean the hell out of the paint with rubbing alcohol are wax remover. cause if there is wax still on the paint the kit really isnt gonna stick too well.. also when i put mine on it came with adhesion promotor and that stuff makes it so it definatly wont start peelin back on you

Yeah what solaraN8 said you need to clean it with rubbing alcohol and keep the car out in the sun so the tape will stick better.....

as for the 3M tape it should be black with a peel off red film good luck

Yeah it was black with a peel off red film... regarding the cleanliness of the paint, I just got my car back from the shop from being painted, I washed my car when I got home, so yeah that surface was definitely clean, although i didn't use rubbing alcohol i did get all the dirt off... I guess I'll remove the kit tomorrow (pain in the ass) and grab some of that adhesive promoter and go at it again. Thanks

there is more than just cleaning if you want it done right. You have to 'heat' the tape when you peal off the red thingie to make it stick well...all this after you clean BOTH surfces. The screws should do you suffice..you don't need to drill more holes..as long as you can do it right the first time.

How would you heat the tape? The obvious would be fire but then again if you use fire, well your kit will melt :lol:

^hair dryer?
Hell .. no tape I use is really good enough for the car so I ended up using 3M tape, heating it with hairdryer, and to make sure it would stick I used other areas like the front, middle, and back parts of each piece with Gorilla Glue. I'm not ever taking my kit off, so I dont really mind.

I just used some cleaner/wax stripper, then adhesion promoter, then threw the pieces on with the tape and added the supplied screws... been going six months strong without any issues, I wouldnt think you would have to heat it but im sure it wouldnt hurt...
