for straight legal and overall brightest output here, it has to be the Sylvania Silverstars. For the main model that is ecxtremely similar (parent company) get the OSRAM Silverstars +50%. Those are only avail overseas as it is too bright for commercial sale. You can find some places that sell em, but all they are really are brighter overworked Silvanis Silverstars.

edit:: i forgot, you can get the silverstars over at kragen, pepboys, etc. I think I even saw them at walmart for a cheapo 40 bucks!

Thier not overworked Sylvanias Silverstars. Thier actually overworked Xtravisions. The Sylvania silverstars have a blue tint, which the osrams do not. The blue tint makes them "whiter" but less bright.

I have heard that the Sylvania Xtravisions are brighter than Silvania Silverstars since they also lack this tint, but I have not had to replace my Silverstars since I first got them, so I dont know first hand.

Hey guys

I would have to say the rebased 9006 d2s HID bulb. haha...

well...I used PIAA for awhile, and they really have good technology...by far the best bulbs I've had, pure white, not blue.

I talked to a cop after he pulled me over for having bluish white indicators and he told me that any bulbs that had blue tinted glass (or in my case, bulbs that are silver coated) are illegal, that the bulb itself has to be clear. Even if bulbs like PIAA or Sylvania claim to be street legal, as long as the glass is blue it is not okay. Is there such as bulb that has clear glass and still lights up white? For instance, are the Xtravision bulbs tinted blue?

oh crap... I forgot about those. Damn, those Razo bulbs that Simon has on his Solara seem to be the brightest/white i've seen so far. I've seen other brighter bulbs as with the silverstars/piaa but they dont have a nice balance between white and bright.

Ohh thanks for clearing up the confusion. I forgot to mention that the xtravision are nothing more than uncoated/tinted silverstars. To be fair, the OSRAM bulb 30%+ are comparable to the xtravision bulbs while the 50%+ are like running the sylvania silverstarts without the tint. All in all, they are still overworked bulbs when you go high end... leading to short life.

Are they really illegal? Im pretty positive that they are legal or else sylvania wouldnt be pumping money into them. I think its more a case of an ignorant cop (I had a inspection guy tell me that my Silverstar corners (tinted blue) were also illegal, even tho they lit up amber, but he passed me anyways)

Stock amber bulbs arent clear either. I dont know man...Someone please prove me wrong if they can find proof that tinted bulbs are illegal.

Ill do some research on this and let u guys know if I find anything.

----EDIT

I cant find anything anywhere that says the bulb itself has to be clear, just that all lights visible on the front of the car have to be white, yellow, or amber, and lights from the front to the back tire have to be yellow or amber. Thats straight from a 485 page PDF on DMV regulations (Granted it was for the state of Connecticut, but thats all I could find)

However, I did find alot more sources that said the Xtravisions were brighter than the Silverstars, so if you want the brightest without hunting down Osram Silverstars, that may be the way to go.

Simply put, whiteness comes at the expense of brightness in halogen bulbs, since a blue tint must be applied to filter out some of the yellows (blocking some of the light) in order to get this whiter light. Silverstars are overcharged, however, so they may be the same brightness, or brighter than stock bulbs, but the Xtravisions (+30%) and Osram SS (+50%) are also overcharged without a tint, producting light brighter than the Silvania SS.

Thier on sale everywhere ive seen, but the packaging doesnt make them stand out much.

Its in a normal package, but with a pink backing. Ive seen them at Autozone and Pepboys. Its alot cheaper than Silverstars too, since the base packaging means thier targeted at a normal market, and not the customization market that want the whiter "HID look" (anyone can tell thier not HIDs because they dont have the HIDs brightness, so even thats hardly valid). I think thier about 8 bucks a bulb, with silverstars being about 20 a bulb. I'll most likely go to Xtravisions after one of my Silverstars blow, since a whiter light is cool, but you cant compare that with being able to see better at night. I know Ive read alot, but I want to see for myself if it is indeed brighter, and if it is, ill switch up. (Its possible for the Silverstars to be as bright, but because of the tint, that means they have to be much more overdriven to produce the same light output, and therefore will have a shorter life. If they are just as bright, you can be sure they have a shorter life than Xtravisions.)

If you cant find them, Philips High Visibility should be good too, since they also lack the tint and claim to be brighter than stock lights.

Heres an excellent article on these points. The tone in this article is kind of overly zealous, but its a good article if you just look at the facts.
