How to sound deaden your car and fiberglass too!

Did some sanding today. I started off with an electric sander, then used some by hand to start to shape things. As you can see there are still a lot of holes, so the next chance i get, i will spread some body filler over it to fill in the holes. This is where the box really begins to take shape.

So how much are these MOFOs gonna weigh once you have them finished?

Actualy, They were surprisingly light. So far they are much lighter than an MDF box of similar dimensions. There is still a little more body filler to be added to get the shape i want, but that shouldn't change much in terms of overall mass.

Just wow - this is a really impressive write-up, and has been a blast to read.

When I saw how old the original thread was, I was kinda hoping that you had already finished so I could see it through to the finish!

Looking forward to the next installment, this is some fantastic work - I hope to someday have the time and inclination to do something like this for my own vehicle

Ahh... you got a point here - I forgot that most peeps use all MDF for their boxes so that makes sense!

Ok, well were in the home streatch here. Now, normaly people do this at the begining, but in my infinite wisdome, i forgot to do it and i wanted to recess the sub in. So i cut a trim ring outa 1/4" MDF and sanded it to fit the shape. I glued it in place.




Next you have to fill in the gaps that it created, so lots of body filler.





Now comes the final sanding to make sure everything is smooth.




As you can see its a good fit. I need to build it out a little on the edge to fill in a gap, but overall it seems to work.




And here is what it looks like with the 8" sub in it.

nice dude, i went through enough trouble with the single large fb box, didnt have it in me to put the 10s in the sides like that with the dual boxes. looks amazing though. - are you going to paint em or carpet them? my worksmanship is plenty durable but not nearly as pretty as yours, i had to use the 9x9 sheets of fb cloth from home depot instead of the thinner type you had

Yeah, often you can find the chop mat at boating supply stores (like Marine West). I did use the weave mat for my 2nd layer if you look way back in the pics.

As for covering, were thinking of using perhaps a white suede to match close to the body color. The big issue is if it's going to stick to the contour. When in doubt if it just don't hold, sand off the glue and paint it to match the body color.

Finaly Finished!!!

Ok so wrapping the box is actualy really easy. I got matched carpet from tweeter's car stereo department since they make custom boxes and i didn't want to order a huge amount of this stuff. All you need to do is cover the top with an adheasive, simple spray glue from a can works. and then pull/streatch the carpet over the box.




Work it into all the corners and the surface starting from the inside and going out keeping tension at all times.






With one box done, we need to do the other one to match.






Looks great, time to cut off the excess and drop in that sub.







To run the wires, just drill a small hole in the back. Fill the hole with silicon glue to plug the gap air tight.





This was a basic amp rack that I had built for my friend. It sits on top of the spair tire and has handles for removal in an emergency.







And there you have it, the final product. The mold flexed in a little so i filled in the edges as best i could. Super strength velco was attached to the back of the box to keep them from sliding in the turns.

Welp, after all that work, his car got rear ended. Boxes actualy held up really well and might be salvageable.




But he's just got an 09 legacy GT, so we get to start all over again.
