Insurance and driving other people's cars

Hows that work? Are you insured when you drive someone else's car? If someone runs into you, whos insurance do you contact? What if the other car is registered out of state?

Ive tried googling and I cant find anything definitive.
I'm in a no-fault state if that matters.

Long story is I got a friend from NY with a 5spd Kia, and he just bought a new car. He was tossin around the idea of teachin me stick for a day and lending me the car for a week to practice on. I don't wanna do that unless I'm covered though.

Also got another friend (NJ, local) whos goin to Europe for a while and wants me to carsit. Shes convinced I'm not covered at all if I drive it. I wanna see if I can drive that around if I need to put my Solara in the shop.

Thanks in advance.

From my experience the car is insured as well as the driver, for instance I got hit by a drunk driver who was driving his buddies truck, the owner of the car's insurance paid for all of the damages and medical. That was in North Dakota, I dunno every state may have different laws.

sorry not a whole lot of help, but just my experience with it

i believe it covers you as long as you're not excluded from the insurance.

Works differently in different states:
when i was in wisconsin (living and titled there), if any third party drove my car (with my concent) my liability insurance transfered over them! Meaning they did not need seperate insurance for them driving my car!
Here in texas (since i'm living and titled here), if any third party drove my car (with my concent) they need liability insurance that covers them...my insurance WILL NOT transfer over to them. Call your agent, i only know for TX and WI!

To be safe I would contact your Insurance company as well as hers to find out.

If your driving another person's car.......you have to be careful.

You are not liable for any accidents, damages or whatever else can happen while your driving a friends car. The owner (your friend) is 100% liable and responsible for anything that happens if you come in contact with another vehicle.

If a accident happens (god forbid) your friend's insurance will be hit with the bill and the premium will go up at the end of the year.

On the otherhand, if you get rear-ended and its the other person's fault, your friend's car will be fixed at the otehr person's expense. However your well being will not be covered because your not the owner of the insured car.....if anything you'll be covered by your friends insurance (stupid policy but the injured cannot claim anything because he or she is not insured under the vehicle).

Out of State Insurance, you have to deal with a lot of telephone assistance, faxes and all the other bullshyt because the insured is in another state and distance isn't on your side.

.......too sum it up, if your gonna borrow your friend's car Be Exetremely Careful....More Then Usual.......not to get caught and hit with a ticket, or worst off in any type of accident.

.......if your wondering, my girl works for an insurance company and I'm currently reading up on some of the books she gets to bring home for me to learn some more......thinking of possibly being an insurance agent in the future.......but my gurl read over what I wrote and said the info is correct.

Hope this info was helpful to you...... 8)

If you have full coverage, most likely it will also cover the car you rent or borrow. however, different company might have different rules, check with your insurance company and your friend's insurance first. I know my 21st century does so.

but from my understanding, if you drive your friend's car and something happen, your friend would have to pay the expense from his/her pocket because no insurance is covered (if their policy doesnt now including the borrower)

Good question, like a few others have said, my full coverage will cover any car I am driving, family, friend, rental, etc.

I had to learn to drive on a 5 speed and it didn't come as easy as 45 minutes for me. I hated it at first.

1 piece of advise.......unless is really necessary, try not to drive someone's car..........I know you do trust your friend, but I heard some horrible story about driving someone's car and got in trouble....the easy part is lose a friend, lose some money, but I heard someone just got arrested because the owner of the car did have a accident and ran away from the scene, then took off, and let his friend drive the car for free....then cops arrest that friend and thought he was the one caused the accident few days ago...........

Of course, he has a lot of things to proof that he was not the driver at the scene...but again, a lot of time and money wasted.....

haha yea ok if someone wants to spend 6 years to pretend to be my friend to frame me for a hit n run, ill applaud the effort.

I havent called yet, but from some research, I think the collision and comprehensive follows the car, and the personal injury/tort, etc. portion follows the driver. It kind of makes sense if you think about it. Ill find out for sure soon.
