253 miles while Fuel tank is half full

Hari: Fuel Filter (every 10,000 miles change it), sparks (depending on milage). Sounds like symptons my 5sfe celica had!

Ok, I'm at 285 miles now and the needle is about 10 degrees below the halfway mark. I guess this is normal then.

But what do you guys think about this issue? Why was my car running a lower gas mileage before the installation of the TRD muffler? I was expecting I would be using more gas coz the TRD muffler is less restrictive than stock.

My suspicion is that my ECU was compensating for wrong signals and after the TRD muffler was installed, something got tweaked and now the ECU is working fine (?) or whatever heheh :drinking:

I don't know what happened before to you but what ever is happening now is normal. I get the same gas mileage since day one!!! 4 years!! 500+ highway 380 - 450 city depending on how hard I drive/starts/&stop-go. :onfire: Only me in the car with light load. I love my i4!!
Don't worry about your fuel filter dude. Your car is still new! I still have not changed mine and don't intend on changing it for a couple more years. I mean unless you added some crap in your tank that will screw it up.

yea ive been driving my car pretty much the same way between now and summer. its about 85% highway, so i should be getting pretty good mileage. i try keeping my RPMs under 3000 most of the time too. but i mean i havent changed my driving habits between now and summer, so im trying to figure out why my gas mileage has decreased so much.

Its a cold one out there!
Hey Hari, I have not Idea. Lets meet up, you stay out here in Atlanta. We can comare engines, test drive, try and find out a root cause. I stay around 85 & Pleasant Hill.
There are many factors that take to play in gas milage. Dramatic drops are not normal however.

Yeah talk about Irony: I replaced my muffler to a non-restrictive and then I gain 50% gas-mileage!

If you were only getting 300miles off a tank with an I4 either you are redlining it all the time or something was wrong.

400-500 is about right for the 4cyl

Same here. And I push my car over 3000 RPM almost daily. On 100% highway driving I get 450-475 depending on how fast I go. I noticed I got about 20 miles more per tank when I switched over to Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-30. Also, I always change the oil every 3k and put injector cleaner in at the same time.

Oh yeah, I'm bone stock 2000 SLE V6 except for TRD rims.

If you are getting really bad mileage I would look at the following:
Spark plugs and wires: When I replaced mine at 60K they really looked burned. After the change I got 35-40 more miles per tank. Next time I plan on changing the plugs (OEM Platinums) at 45k intervals.

Injector cleaner: consider using the off the shelf stuff first, but the dealer's cleaning can help a lot because it cleans out the throttle body too. It's a high pressure system that they attach directly to the engine so it bypasses the fuel line and doesn't get diluted by a tank of gas.

Fuel Filter: commonly overlooked, but if it is you will have a greater resistance to the flow of fuel, making the engine work harder.

I'm not really surprised that you people have seen better mileage by putting on different low-resistance mufflers (TRD, etc.). There is less back pressure on the exhaust system and therefore the engine has to work less hard. It is the same reason why you get an 2-3HP by putting on that muffler: less resistance to flow. Remember, our stock mufflers were made to keep little old women happy: NO NOISE = HIGH FLOW RESISTANCE.

Just my .02.

Just to clear it up, what's considered normal mileage for the V6? I've heard 20 city / 29 hwy, but from what I'm reading, you guys are getting better than that. Is that all on 87 octane pee water? Or 91?

And for grins, what's the normal mileage on the 4cyl?

For my 1mzfe: I'm getting close to 26 mpg on highways - close to 400 before the fuel light comes on! (best has been 420miles on a single tank w/o light coming on)
For my 5sfe: I'm getting close t o 28 mpg on highways - close to 430 at times before the fuel light comes on! (best has been over 450 all highways, before the light came on).

I don't wait for the light to come on to refill gas...so true milages could be skewed a bit..but thats what i've noted on my 4banger and v6!

See Yanks, that's the thing I was wondering about. I probably redline my car once in 2 months. I drive it at a normal pace and that hasn't changed since my stock muffler. I think Davpak has a point about the engine not doing more work than it used to because of a low-resistance exhaust.

I was jumping for joy when I first hit 390 miles when the orange light lit up and never turned off again. And that was because I was doing about 85% highway. I envy those who say they USUALLY get around 400+ :(

By the way, I am at 350+ miles now and still above empty line and no orange light at all :D
