Stainless Steel Brake Lines

Postby 2002greenhornet » Sun Jul 24, 2005 12:04 pm

I did a search but couldn't find reference to my specific problem. I bought Goodridge SS Brake Lines, part #21064, which is supposed to fit the V6 Solara. I went to install them last week as part of a complete brake job (also installed zinc-plated drilled rotors, ceramic pads, and painted the calipers).

But the brake lines didn't fit! More specifically, the pressure fittings fit correctly, but the mounting points didn't. The bracket that bolts the line to the strut would not place the brake line into the correct position, and the chassis mount end was the wrong size, preventing me from putting the end completely through the bracket on the fender wall, which in turn prevented me from installing the clip which secures the line at that end.

It seems that others have installed these same lines, so I'm wondering what gives. Did you do modifications to allow correct fitment?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

In regards to the strut mounting bracket. You saw that the original round portion of the bracket on the strut is too small right? Use the round area above that mounting point. It's fits fine there and can be tightened down correctly. In regards to the clip area on the chassis. I don't remember having a problem there. I would have to go look at my car and see what you mean.

Paul, I did see this solution for the strut mount. Didn't like it much, but would have done it if the chassis mount would have fit properly. The problem with the clip is that the brakeline end is too big to fit through the hole in the bracket and seat properly, making it impossible to install the clip. Here's a picture to illustrate:

I'm clearly missing something if others managed this with the same parts. If you can see what by looking at yours, I'd sincerely appreciate it. Thanks for the help.

I will take a look after work today and let you know or shoot you a pic. Unless someone else can help before that.

I just checked my front and back lines to make sure I don't give you any wrong info but I honestly don't remember having any problem with the brackets and clips. They are mounted fine. In fact the only minor thing I did was mount the rear line bracket that attaches to the strut on the area of the mount we discussed earlier. It works perfectly fine there and can be tighened down just fine. My front line brackets are on the stock locations on the strut. Maybe I can shoot you a pic.

Mine mounted in directly. . . Make sure you put it in the right way or if that hole is dirty or not because there might be some dirt on there that makes the hole too small

Everything was clean, but clearly I missed something... I'm gonna revisit it this weekend. It was like 95 degrees in the direct sun when I was doing it, so I was not focusing as well as I might otherwise, maybe.

Thanks guys.

Here I go again with the thread resurrections. Anyways did you get your issue resolved? I did some searching for 21064 and saw that it may only work for the Gen 1 and not the 1.5.

Essentially if it works I'm gonna buy a set of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33562&item=8024681434

Yeah, I resolved it. Sorry--should have posted that. I tried again later and realized my mistake. In my defense, it was so freakin' hot the first time, I was near delirious and was almost happy it didn't fit, cuz it meant I could get out of the heat.

It was complete stupidity on my part. I just didn't rotate the fitting in the bracket so it would slide through properly to allow the clip to click in. They fit fine, except where it bolts to the strut on the rears the diameter is different, so you have to bolt it up to one side of the bracket there. Not a big deal, you'll see what I mean if you do it.

21064 is the right kit, and that's a good price.
