if you floor your car while racing, it will shift at optimum points anyways. taking it to redline or further in L, then shifting into 2, doing hte same, and then putting it into D, will just make you slower. not to mention the risk of damaging your engine and tranny. also for downshifting, its better to floor it and let ur ecu take care of the shifts, because if you are going 60 and all of a sudden put it into '2', you will blow your engine. overall not a good idea. only time u should use L and 2 is for ascending or descending steep hills.

i mean i myself noe as for downshifting whether or not its gonna redline. Obviously i wont downshift if i wuz goin 80. I agree and i understand wut ur sayin and everything but there are those few occasions where even when i floor it and the car will juss stay in gear and takes forever to gain speed. Thats why i downshift to 2 or even L sumtymes. As for shifting times i think its still the same... its not slower or anything juss a matter of if u noe when to shift it, unless u forget to shift and it redlines for a while.

Does starting in L improve performance off the line? It seems as if it has more of a torquier feel. I dunn0 maybe its juss me.

umm when you down shift in an auto if your going too fast the ecu will not let it down shift say your going 80 and down it to 2nd it will shift when it is at a safe speed try it you can;t blow your engine

well i used to have an I4 auto like you, and i noticed when i shifted up from L->2 or 2->D, there was a lag for the shift, its not as quick as a manual shift. so any 'perfect' timing you may have will be thrown off. the only time (other than hills) that i can think of where its good to leave it in a lower gear, is if ur wanting to race some guy, and ur going slow cuz want him to catch up to you first, and then punch it, it would be good to keep it in a lower gear so you dont have to wait for the downshift before you take off.

as for leaving it in L off the line, it doesnt give you any more power, its just in your head. its prolly just that when you let off the gas, it has the feel of that manual, slowing down on its own, and then the throttle is really responsive when you touch it because its still in first gear. overall you're not really getting anymore power. its the same thing when people think theyre getting more 'traction' when they turn their overdrive off.

Best way at all to race in an a/t that I find is to use the brake launch technique, or whatever you may call it.
