HELP!? mirrors...

Postby mcgervey » Thu Jul 29, 2004 7:21 am

Some a**Hole sideswiped my car this morning while I was in the shower. Turns out we are pretty sure it's this moron in a maroon toyota all hopped up that speeds insanely through our residential neighborhood where KIDS PLAY, and 25 is probably too fast.

My girl and her girlfriend both heard it, I thought I heard a loud crack as I got in the shower. Anyway they know the sound of the truck because they hear it all the time, and scream and curse at him apparently quite a lot. They have a daycare in the house and there's 12 to 15 children on premises from early morning to late afternoon.

Oh, and my car was parked not even 2 inches from the curb, perfectly flush, and in front of our 03 Sienna which was also perfectly flush behind my car. He no doubt was going to fast and had to move over because of a car coming up the hill and out of a blind turn ahead (another reason no one should fly on this RESIDENTIAL road).

Anyway... Despite my anger, having the car barely less than 2 months. All that really happened was my drivers side mirror is toast, and a small black brush on the front of the front wheel well. We think that will buff out ok.

So, I see a 99 Camry mirror on ebay. Same mirror? Looks close, but I don't know... It's only $20 so far... Some guy has a pass side one for the same price, but I don't need that side. Someone does because it's being bid.

Anyone got any advice on mirror compatibilities or where I can find one without getting raped? My deductable is $500 so there's no way it would pay to even try the insurance route. Even if I have to pay $100 for a mirror and $100 to paint it, I would still be footing the bill.

Thanks guys! (The auction for the camry mirror closes in 7 hours, so if anyone knows, reply quick!)

We're going looking for that maroon truck in the neighborhood later. He's flying by every day, twice or more a day, so he lives or has ties up here somewhere... If I find gray paint on his bumper or truck, he's in serious hot water. Despite having a police report in, I'm not exactly a calm tempered dude sometimes... .No, I'll try not to hurt him. If he gets in my face though... lookout. I doubt that will be the case though, since I'm 6'4", 225.... Most people crap their pants when I get in their face.

Thanks folks,

RJM

Oh, here's the Camry mirror. I'm at work and can't get outside the office yet. Looks a little squarer?

Im pretty sure its different. Solaras a coupe, so it has longer doors which makes the mirrors more triangular. The sedans got smaller front doors, so the mirror should be squarer.

What color is it? I assume its black since the link you have is black. Ive been looking for a driver side mirror too since I scratched mine up a bit, and ive only seen one or two on ebay in the last 3 or 4 months. I passed one one since it was silver, and the other went out of what I was willing to pay (I think it was around 50 shipped for black). Just so you have an idea of the frequency and price range of the mirrors.

Postby mcgervey » Thu Jul 29, 2004 7:38 am

Mine is the light gray/silver

Same color, I think, as this guy on here selling his:
http://photos.yahoo.com/hotanphamdo

That's about the same car I have... to the T, I think...

I figured that mirrow was a little more boxy.. But I'm looking at some pics and they look similar.

If you know where I can find the silver one, PLEASE let me know...

thanks, Rich

Sorry to hear that and I hope you get it fixed.

My buddy's Cavalier has been swiped so many times due to parking on a busy street. I know you're in a residential area and peeps should be extra care because of kids, but some just aren't. That's a dang shame.

They have the color I need, but they want $112 shipped...

Pretty pricy, but might do it since having one painted will be a small fortune too.

Anyone know where I can get a silver mirror, LH, for a lot cheaper than this?

These guys have a bunch of Solara's, and are in Cali, if anyone wants to check out the link above. Links to photos of the cars.

Good luck with the mirror and I hope there isn't any other damage. Reminds me of a time a LONG time ago. My girlfriends car got backed into and put a nice crease in the door. Next day I noticed that the car at the neighboors house across the street from where she was parked had the same silver paint as her car on their bumper. I measured the height and sure enough it matched up to the crease. Called the police and had them check it out. Police spoke to the neighboor and they denied doing the damage, even though it was totally obvious that they did it. Cop said he couldn't do anything about it since they were denying it and there were no witnesses.

I think you should just go for it.

Ebay would be cheaper, but you would have to wait for it. Rear view mirrors are pretty important, so Id pay the extra to get it now. Its better than getting in an accident down the road because you couldnt see a car.

And painting is a pain, and pretty expensive, and even then its not a guarenteed match, so if you can get a silver one, Id go for it.

Is the wiring harness torn too? If so, the power mirror may not work.

I went ahead and got it. The guy at TAP said it was weird, but his computer didn't have the paint code entered into it for that car. Usually he said they did. But I did have the car it was coming off of in front of me in the online picture, and it looks like my silver/gray color.

He came down a tad on it. The guy yesterday quoted me $112. This guy, after bsing with him a minute and telling him my hit and run story and all, quoted me 85+7 shipping. So it's on the way for $92. Hopefully the color will be a perfect match.

The mirror that is on it is cracked up but still there. It's actually a pain to see through it though because you have to kind of contort your eyes to see through the big uncracked piece.

I bought one of those stick on mirror repair deals at AutoZone today and cut it to fit, because my inspection actually expires sunday (great timing on this right?!)... It's not that great either. Poor quality mirror. Looks a little better but still isn't that functional. The guys at the Toyota shop where I bought the car actually gave me some grief over it and the inspection, until I pointed out they were supposed to inspect the car and give me a 4 wheel alignment days after I bought it, as part of the deal, and they had it in their shop all day and never did squat.

So they inspected it. They found the two tires on the back were bad too. Didn't look bad, but they were worn in the middle (improper overinflation?)... So they comp'ed me two tires to after I gave them some more grief. (I had a salesman there when I bought my last car there tell me that they "never sell a car without going over it first and without good tires.")

Anyway. Through all my raging at the dealer I'm getting my inspection, 2 new tires, and a four wheel alignment. Not sure what kind of tires they are but I don't care. It's got decent Eagles of some sort on the front, but I hate Eagles. So after I tear these up I'll probably be getting Goodrichs or Michelins anyway.

Now I just hope this mirror is the right color.

Oh, if you guys need parts, check these guys out. They've got the biggest Solara wrecked and general toyota inventory I've seen ANYWHERE!

And it's pretty sweet being able to see the cars picks online that the parts will come from. They will sit there on the phone with you and tell you which car the part is coming from as you're looking at the pictures (if you tell them you're on the website looking at the cars).

Just go to used cars and you have to scroll to the "page two" or next page (I think it's a down arrow) to get to the Solara models. (You'll see camry on the first pop down window, the next window has solara's on it.)
