Painted my calipers

Painted my calipers

Postby Blazed04 » Thu Aug 12, 2004 2:48 pm

I dunno...i got bored a few days ago and decided to paint my calipers. There were some threads about this a while ago but i dont know if anyone actually went through with painting them or not. I just wanted an eye catcher (besides the chrome) to set the car apart from all the stock Gen2's on the road. Take a look. Image Image

All i did was took my wheels off, taped off the rotors and all other parts that i didnt want over-spray on (including my fenders & quater panels) just used some brake cleaner on the caliper to clean it off, and sprayed it with the red caliper paint. Did 3 coats, it dried it no more than 2 minutes each coat. Simple. The longest part was taking off and putting on my wheels.

Sweet job Blazed. The calipers look so small with those dubs. I have done this to the GT in the past and I had to reapply every summer. The extreme heat due to stopping heats the brakes up and the front brakes start cracking and peeling after a while. I think the cold weather coupled with the extreme heat of the brakes cause the cracking especially. If you don't buy that, just look at the streets which go through constant hot and cold temps. Even the pipes burst after being expanded and going back to normal size due to temp. fluctuations. Just giving a heads up. I have been thinking of doing that myself, but I don't know if I want to deal with the yearly maintainence.

I used porshe caliper paint. This was the enamel stuff the first time then I used the spray caliper paint the second time around. Either way, unless you powdercoat the rotors, they will crack and peel. This isn.t a problem because you just touch them up as needed as oppossed to starting over.

What kind of enamel did you use? I've been thinking about buying the G2 kit.

Thanks

I can't remeber but I do know that I used two different brands made for calipers and they both started to crack and peel. Thyey just need mainatainence about every 6mos- year depending on weather and driving habits. If you do alot of racing and are hard on the brakes and heat them up, more than likely they will peel faster than someone who just uses their car tfor daily driving and doesn't stop at 80-100mph+!

I've done that with my prelude before, but I used high-temp resistant paint so that cracking and peeling didn't occur. They lasted for about 2 years - after that point they just got dirty and I resprayed them.

Anyway, on a side note: Did you lower your car? If not - that is perfect! Great size wheels for the car. I'm definitley getting 20"s if you didn't lower it. :)

Question,

I herard that its recommended to change the brakes when you get new rims, cuz I'm assuming you'll need some more stopping power to those bigger rims and tires. Is this true?

its recommended you change brakes when they wear down!

other than that the only other time you need to upgrade your braking power is when you gain more power and speed.

it is always a plus to upgrade a brake system.
