Interior Neons

Postby SolaraGuy22 » Sun Sep 12, 2004 5:29 pm

I was wondering if anyone had pictures of how and where they mounted their interior neons. I have read the tutorials on hooking them up but would like to know if screwing them in the bottom by your feet would be best (as far as getting the maximum glow, I know that screwing in the car isn't the best but I'll do it dammit) or on the side of the carpet by the driver pedal or what. Also as far as the back, I saw a cavalier driving by one day and he had them on each side by the back windows. I have four 9" tubes that I want to light up the interior (front and back) and thought someone might have more detailed pictures than bassthrive, thanks btw for your help bass.

Also what would you use to light up the center emblem? Should I get a small tube or find some type of round LED cluster to mount in the center. Thanks for your opinions.

Anyone post step by step pictures on their cardomain site like i'm doing? Do you think it's worth the time to even post them?

I had mine, but it's no longer there now. Check my WWW under my profile. It's on the first page of my cardomain site I think. I placed 10" bars under each seat. That way I didn't have to deal with the mounting issue under the dash, while getting the same effect.

Neons

We actually have the same year and colors. Is yours an SE or SLE? I actually want to use your idea but in green. What kind of setup is the grill and bumper lights, is it 4 mini tubes or what? How did you mount them as well? Clips or drilling involved?

Mine is an SE (2AZFE A/T). For the interior I hubbed the wires beneath the carpet for the driver side neon, and beneath the center console for the passenger side neon. I routed them behind the fusebox right by the dead pedal. The positive connection was connected to the headlight switch fuse I think (quick n cheap way for me). That way, they only turn on when the headlights are on.

As for the grill lights, I used 4 blue LEDs. I got it on ebay and they usually come in a 4-pack thingie. I forgot the name of it but you'll find it there. It's a common listing on ebay.

I used 1 LED behind the toyota logo and tied it behind the hood lock :D Those other 3 LEDs were just my attempt of using the remaining 3 which I had no idea what to do with them. I don't have any of those lights on anymore and still have the 4 LEDs. I'm gonna use them somehow but I haven't spent time figuring that out yet.

I've got a thorough DIY tutorial on my cardomain. click my www. I just tied my neons to wires using twist ties. Works good and not permanent like screwing them in. I don't recommend doing anything permanent, there's usually a more temporary way to install lighting accessories. I also have led's in my grill (which I don't have pics of just yet). I used 7 total for the grill. 4 for the upper grill and 3 for the lower. And recently I installed a 15" neon vel-cro'ed (sp?) to the top of my rear windshield that reacts to bass. Neons are good, I like led's better because they're more durable. But they don't radiate 360 degrees of light. So I have both. Let me know what ya think.

Thank you xyntax and pythonjosh, you both have helped me out so much. I purchased two 4 pack LED's from eBay (thanks for saving me search time on those items by the way), I'm sure they'll be fun installing. I will be putting them in the center emblem and air vents. I will let you know how that idea turns out and take pics. pythonjosh I will be using your idea on the switch as far as having the keyring light come on with the switch. I was actually about to request help for that feature but won't have to now. One of the main things that got me confused was the transformer that came with the neons, it isn't part of the bulb but has separate connections to it and that made me think I didn't need to use it and just run the neons to the power source and switch. Probably would have zapped something huh? I will be using the switch location that bassthrive has (driver side change compartment). I would like to thank everyone again for their help.

I was thinking of changing the dome light to green but fear the colors of the light and the neons not matching, what are some opinions on this? I just leave it off all the time but will turn it on if it looks good. Anyone have any pictures? I have Street Glow 9" green tubes and can't seem to find Street Glow brand but the APC seems to be the one I would go with but not sure if it matches.

So do you have both led's and neons? And I wouldn't spend too much on neons. I bought mine off ebay 4 12" tubes for $40. Neons can break just as easily as any other. It sounds like your neons have a separate transformer right? Let me know, I can tell you a bit about the kind of electricity that powers neons tubes.

Interior Neons

Postby SolaraGuy22 » Tue Sep 14, 2004 3:31 pm

I purchased these http://www.cardomain.com/item/STGAN9GR They come in pairs, I was able to use their 105% price match to my advantage. I found a site that was selling them very cheap and was able to have them drop the price, I got both for about $45. Not too bad I guess, I know there is cheaper but oh well. I purchased 2 packs of the 4 LED bulbs that xyntax mentioned that were on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7921155286&category=33714 I will put these in the air vents and center grill emblem. I'm not sure how I will mount or wire these, I will search tonight and see if anyone has a tutorial on how they did it. I am hoping to have all the neons and LED's on one switch. I took a couple pictures of the neons I do have that you wanted to know more about. Have you seen anything like this? I know you have your transformer on the actual tube. I will probably mount a set right below the glove compartment (hidden) and one on the side in the carpet by the shifter (viewable) and vice versa for the driver side. That way I can hide the transformer under something. Let me know what you think. Thanks
