How to check engine error codes on a 2000 SE (check engine)

Yesterday I replaced my Cat/flex pipe with an aftermarket "high flow" unit, the OEM flex pipe had rotted apart. After about 150 miles the check engine light came on. Nothing looks amiss with the engine, O2 sensor is hooked up and all fluids are correct. Is there some trick to checking the engine codes, or do I need a scanner of some sort? Car isn't driving any diffrently from before to after the check engine light.

OBD I had a trick with LEDs, I believe there is a modified version for OBD II but it isn't accurate.

Goto autozone or a place that can read codes. Also you could buy an obd II scanner, i have the one from scantools.net and i love it
