clicking noise while braking or sometimes turning

Postby hari-bhari » Mon Oct 04, 2004 8:43 pm

i hear this weird clicking noise usually the first time i drive my car out of the deck. it happens when i brake, usually on a downwards slope, and seems to be coming from the rear, sort of a metallic click of something snapping back into place...any ideas? car drives fine in terms of handling and braking. oh and this is not related to my new wheels/suspension. i heard it before i had the new stuff put on, but ignored it.

Interesting. I had the same noise too but from the front more then the back. I was told it was only the sway bar and anti-roll bar doing its job at pulling at you. So my best guess is that its just same with you. Its could just be stiff suspension doing its job. It could also mean its breaking in and getting loose over time.

I guess im not the only one. I get that same clicking right before I brake. It doesn't do it all the time, but if i do a light braking it clicks. I asked the guy at the brake shop and he said its the brakes resettling. I don't really believe it though, cause when I bought the car brand new it wasn't doing that. any ideas as to what it can be folks?

Brake rotors are bare steel. Bare steel will rust very quickly when exposed to any humidity. The area covered by the brake pad does not rust. So, in the morning you end up with a rusted rotor with one area that is not rusted. This then can cause a sound or a slight pedal pulsation until the rust is worn off. More humid, more rust, more noticeable.
Or it could be something else totally.....

Clickin' noise

Postby SleeperSolara » Wed Oct 06, 2004 7:01 am

It is the steering parts.
It happens to my dads 98 Camry, it very common in our cars.
When we brought the car to the dealer to get it checked out, they found that one of our shocks were leakin'[ not to freak you guys out].
So we asked another friends and his said it was the steering mechs.

I have the exact same problem and it is only noticible when the car is cold or has been sitting a while. I have had my local brake specialist look at it a million times. They think I am crazy. Mine, also, is in the rear.

Do those of you who experienced the clicking (in the rear) use the emergency brake when you park your car? It could be that the e-brake is resettling a little slower because of friction on the guide. It could be worth a shot to break the thing down and check it. BTW, this is a guesstimation on my part, so...

I had the exact same problem except could be from a different origin. I painted my calipers and the offset on the rotor. I taped off the actual rotor but I guess I missed a little spot and got some paint on it. I talked to a friend who owns a service shop and he said to take it out on a backroad, go like 60 mph and step on the brake. I did this three times and the sound was gone forever.

Maybe you have a small rust spot as pointed out by SSSEV6 or some foreign object caught stuck between the rotor and pad. I would recomend doing the brake stand option or getting that rotor turned. This will leave it smooth.
I hold no responsibility if you kill yourself by stepping on the brake at 60 mph.
