Drag Racing tips?

Drag Racing tips?

Postby SBCelicaGT » Fri Oct 08, 2004 4:38 pm

So I've never been drag racing before and I'll be goin to Famoso next thursday. I don't want to look like a retard so I wanted to know if you guys had any tips for launching with the 1MZ engine?

I've got a 5spd tranny, 11lb flywheel, and the car weighs about 2700lbs. I believe the suspension is about 14 years old so the weight transfer is going to be horrible. Assuming I do halfway decent, what kind of trap speeds and ETs should I be expecting?

Are you guys just dumping the clutch or is it better to feather the throttle? Whats a good launch RPM for the 1MZ engine?

Thanks for any suggestions.

i would of always thought you already upgraded your suspension.

as for launch, i have nothing to say, but lower your tire pressure for better grip.

all that torque, so little weight.

Nah. I have too many expenses to upgrade everything at one time. I just finished upgrading the brakes and will upgrade the suspension in the spring.

How low do guys typically lower their tire pressure? Its a pity nobody has a pair of 14" drag slicks I could borrow. I have an extra set of wheels I could put them on.

i'd say since u got the V6 motor, which will be plenny torque, idle it at about 2500 - 2600ish before you get the yellows . . . jus mess with it around there when you hit the tracks. since your suspension is kinna shytty, you're gonna have some traction problems more than likely. shoootz

On thursday, at Famoso, during Sport Compact Car's sponsored event, Track Attack, I had a chance to drag race for the first time.

The car did better than expected. Aside from the times I misshifted, I ran solid 14.7XX's all day long in the +90 degree weather with my best trap speed at 95mph. I think if I had improved my launches I could probably get down to a 14.5 with the car. My best 60ft time was 2.232. This was done on street tires(at 20psi), and 14 year old stock suspension. I think with slicks and better suspension(and a better driver!) the car could hit high 13's.

My reaction times weren't too bad for a drag newbie. My best R/T was 0.184 and most were right around 0.2.

I found the best way to get the car to scoot was to feather the clutch around 2500rpm till the car started moving and then dump it. If I wasn't so concerned about clutch wear I think it would be better to start around 3500rpm instead.

I think somebody at the event got a video of my car running. If so, I'll post it here.
