What Kind of Oil to use?

ok, i jus got my oil changed for the 10k service. i didn't do n e thing else. should i do the other stuff like rotate tires and what not? also i asked a salesman what kind of oil they use and he said their tanks had 10-40......????.....isn't recommended 5w-30 or 10w-30???
how will 10-40 affect me? i live in irvine and park my car outside. i usually drive it when its really cold outside and my car is all wet from moisture. does this matter?

Yikes, go somewhere else from now on and go back and demand 5W-30.

But it's not cold weather you need to worry about it's warm weather.

10W means that the viscosity rating is 10 at cold temperatures. Not sure what temperature they measure it at. The 'W' means Winter.

40 is the viscosity at warmer temperatures. I don't know the temperature for this either. I'll look it up if I have time tomorrow and if I remember.

So it would be inadvisable to drive with 10W-40 oil in Death Valley during the summer afternoons. I don't imagine it's ever a good idea...

But I doubt it'll matter much. This is why I change my own oil though. You never know what crap they stick in your engine.

Some places I hear (don't know of any) will filter your oil, put new additives, and then stick it back in your engine. I'd rather have the fresh stuff.

Well, you shouldn't have to worry too much... it doesn't get THAT cold in irvine =P

But what an ass! Giving you a different oil that the factory recommended... Usually they do that and if they are going to use something else, they ask for your approval first! I bet a lawsuit can be started =P but too much of a hassle hahaha! They should change it to what you want free of charge though... those bast!dz!

5w30 is too thin for California climate. Stick to 10w30. 10w40 is too much. Salesmen are idiots...they really don't know sh!t, they tell you what you wanna hear. BTW, Longo only uses regular Mobil Oil 10w30. All the Toyota dealers in California use 10w30 in your 1MZ-FE. No it doesn't matter that it;s really cold outside and water condenses on your car. It's colder here in Riverside and we have that problem as well. 10w30 is all you need.

Thanx a lot guys....i'm taking my car back to tustin (macpherson) as soon as my s/c comes in....damn now i don't even want them to touch my car for the s/c if they can't get my oil right!!!! ohh well no other choices. longo won't do it for me and i don't konw about n e other dealers. Any recommended dealers in so cal???

i jus finished talking to another guy from Tustin (macpherson) and he says they do use 10w-40 oil because it is better for this area. he says they have been using it for a while also. i don't believe that 10w-40 is the correct oil to use. Will i be ok with this oil until my next oil change?...even after i install my s/c. Next time i'm going to another dealer for my oil change!!!

Bring the car manual, service manual or have them look it up on Shopkey (Snap-on) on their computer and ask them where it says 10W-40 is okay.

10w40 on a 1MZ-FE is overkill. Whoever you talked with at Tustin is a moron. As long as your change your oil regularly...preferably every 3-4k miles, you have nothign to worry about. Don't be so paranoid. You are asking the right person about this. I know, i've had 2 1MZ-FE V6 powered vehicles in my posession for a while now.

i asked them again bout the 10-40 to make sure that is really what they use. don't worry i take ur opinion over any dealer any time!!!! that's y i asked if it was ok to run on this 10-40 until my next oil change....and ur response was yes. so i'll go to longo next time for my oil change since u said they use 10w-30

LOL calm down man. I really prefer Castrol GTX 10w30 over any other regular oil. I've been taking my car to Quality Toyota in Corona lately since 1) their oil change is cheaper than Longo 2) they actually do a good job of washing your car and vacuum it well 3) they don't have arrogant, c0cky service reps to tell you that you need this and that done immediately 4) they use Castrol GTX 10w30 with Toyota filter and 5) They manage to get the job done within their 29 mins or less deal.

wow...thank you very much for that post....i'll be sure to take my car there for my 15k oil change....well actually i think imma do 13k since stupid tustin put 10w-40........do u have a dealer to recommend me for the installation of my s/c in a couple weeks??? as of right now i'm going to tustin for $350 installed no tax
