Your stock key has a chip in it that gets recognized when you put it in the ignition, therefore letting you turn on your car.

Making a regular spare out of your stock key won't turn on your car because it's not chipped!

Botttom line you need to order the key from the dealer.

Is this true for all years of the Solara? I was planning on making a copy of my key... '99 SE.

If it is a v6, chances are that you have a transponder. You'll notice that the head of the key is larger than most keys wtih the plastic heads.

At my dads hardware store, we have a tool that can read if you have a transponder or not.

I've seen dealerships charge as much at $125 for a copy of a transponder key, so shop around

Me niether. 99 SE. The transponder keys are abnormally fat like Mike said. It'll be quite obvious.

I don't think it matters if you're the "SE" class or not. My '00 SE has 2 keys, each with a chip or "transponder" in the head of the key. The manual clearly points out the differences in keys (grey and black coated) and what will happen if you use a non-transponder key. I now, it sounds weird, but I'm just going off what the manual said.

I think it was an option on the SE. Its called "Engine Immobilizer"

Mine doesnt have it, but my moms 02 highlander has it. Her key is very noticibly fatter. Not sure if this was a stand alone option, or it was rolled in with a package.
