Performance Upgrades vs. Insurance

Performance Upgrades vs. Insurance

Postby 2002greenhornet » Fri Oct 22, 2004 8:05 am

With all the stuff that I want to do to my car, I suddenly remembered that my insurance company might want to have something to say about it. I don't like the possibility of getting in an accident and finding out that SC, headers, etc., have made the car ineligible for coverage.
Sure enough, I called my Nationwide rep (I have 3 cars insured, super clean driving record), and she said if I do this stuff they won't cover the car! :bad-words: What are all you guys with big horsepower upgrades doing for insurance?

It would seem that if questions came up, you might be called on to prove that.

My insurance makes me pay like 20% of total from pretty much any aftermarket/body shop receipts. I'm currently with Infinity Insurance, but next year I'm hoping to get 21st Century or AAA. Ray @M1 Autobody recommends either one, I guess they'll cover aftermarket no prob.

I have state Farm insurance and they cover all my aftermarket stuff as long as i have my receipts. About 90% of my mods I have receipts for and i have files kept for it.

Just in case...

Bottom line: Keep your receipts and don’t tell them anything. If something happens then file a claim they will cover if you have the right coverage. Don't risk telling them something and then they just all of the sudden decide not to cover you anymore. Keep you trap shut about the mods and keep your receipts.

Thats exactly what I do. To Geico, my car is just a Camry Solara.

The other day I wanted to see "How much I can save by switching to Geico" and they asked me if I had any modifications. Me being naive told them Suspension, Exhaust, ect... and they asked me how much I spent. They put me on hold and when they came back they said, "Unfortunately we can not provide you insurance or quote because you modified your suspension." Something about in my state it is not covered. I said, "ok" and hung up.

I'm only spending $90 per month with full coverage from State Farm and have been with them forever. They too have me down as "Camry Solara" LOL. I told the Gieco chick Solara and she was all confused until I said, Camry Solara. LOL. Hey that is what it said on the sticker price when I purchased the car too, so after all it is a 2 door Camry.

Your agent isn't correct, there is no reason why the car would not be covered, the items TRD made are not for 'off road/show car' use. My insurance wouldn't pay for any of the aftermarket stuff except the S/C so I took off as much as I could off the car when they took it. Jon.
