Bad story Bad smell :(

Bad story Bad smell :(

so heres the deal and now I am worried as all He!!. Last night I let my friends try is hand at my 99 solara se v6 and its a 5 spd. its got 95k on it. Any way we were drivn down the highway and this punk cavalier was taunting us so I told him to go for it. At 65mph my friend shifts from 5th to 3rd, all is well, then instead of 4rth came 2nd which my solara is very very bad at wanting to do the shift pattern is horibly close to 4rth. Any way needless to say the car jumps to about 8 and 1/2 thousand RPM's, yes 8 and a half, off the scale. he quickly counterd it by putting the clutch in but it was very bad. Every thing seemed all right last night so now.

I woke up this mourning and drove into town, when I got there I noticed a horrible smell. kinda like brakes when there hot or you slammed on them but a tad different, and came to find its comin from the engine bay. Every time I drive it now, around 4 times, at every stop I get a wiff of this smell and when I park it smells horrible. I sat in the parking lot and it lasted a good hour with the car off. I am really worried. The clutch is my guess but would that cause it and can clutches burn constantly. Its not slipping at all and seems fine. Well sorry so long, thanks for any help or suggestions.

he burned your clutch.

not sure why the burn smell is lingering on so long, but you should get things checked out.

how long was the car held at high rpm?

It was at that RPM for about 2-3 secs, and no the idle seems fine and oil and coolants look okay.

would they be able to tell if it was my clutch making that smell. What a week, guess I could probably have them check my strut mounts while its in there. What would cause the clutch too just start burning since then, can you do that to a clutch, to where it just burns constantly.

(My info is from driving volvo's), if your downshift and if you happen to misshift and go over in your revs, the gear doesn't really engage..meaning, the car's got a failsafe mechanism whereby the gear never got engaged, and it is usually stuck out back in neutral automatically. I'm guessing solara might have this too...

I think your friend burned the clutch, and it's stuck in a gear half way in a gear.
Might want to get that check out fast before it gets too pricey and worst.

So it can actually be stuck half way in a gear while I am using it to change and run other gears. It seems to be the worst when I do alot of in town driving and shifting and slipping. On the highway it still smells but not as bad. This will ruin my year. So if I take it in can they diagnose the clutch and all that.

You should crack your friend in the face! At 65 in 3rd your near redlining it anyway. Our powerband goes down after 5500rpms. So he should shift at 5.5k rpms. Tell him to practice driving MT on another car first. This is why I don't let my woman drive. If I'm doing a roll on at 60, I can drop it into 3rd for a second or 2 then shift into 4th.

First, let me congratulate you and your friend for being two of ther biggest jackasses... ever! Yes, he burned up your clutch trying to beat a Cavalier. Good job. What are you, 17?? Him dropping it in 2nd gear is ridiculous, even if it was an accident. What if you had "beat" the Cavalier in your Solara? Wow, this is amazing that someone would even do this. Next time, just let the other guy keep taunting you! You don't have an NSX, Supra, Type R, etc. You drive a Solara-- a nice somewhat sporty car and you got suckered in by a Cavalier on the street. Drive your own car, be safe, and you got what you deserve...

Oh. trust me, I ripped into him pretty good and needless to say that was the first to drive other than me and the last. So I made an appointment at my local toyota dealer today, so its goin in on thurs and there gonna do a front end suspension to check my strut mounts as requested and figure out the smell. Its gonna cost 70 bucks for the inspection, god I hate toyota's when it comes to maintanence costs, but ya gotta do it, well thanks so much for alll your help, if anyone else has anything please let me know.

And thanks for your words of wisdom the most, I realize its just a solara but ya know I do with what I can afford, and if thats a solara which is alot nicer than alot than so be it. And the car has been raced prob twice in its life so one cavalier getting busted down is not gonna hurt. And yes just for you, with a burnt clutch and a mis shift into second the cavalier still got beat and down the road appologized for being an a$$ so if one cocky street racer is now a little more sensable at the cost of my clutch and my friend will probably never drive like that again, the Id say well worth it. And for your personel interest I am 21 and not looking

That's a start there, son... At least you and your friend learned something. It's all good. Enjoy replacing the clutch and the fact that you beat a Cavalier on the street.

You know.. you could have beaten the cav by shifting slowly... also.. I must say that my powerban seems to be great up to 6200... it really starts to pull hard around 4 and just keeps climbing.. but I guess the S/c has something to do w\ it 2
