Putting some Amusing lighting in my 1.5 gen solara....

Postby Grant516 » Mon Nov 08, 2004 6:31 pm

I was interested in adding some lighting to my 2002 Solara, and while I read the varieties of Gen 1.5 DIY tutorials, I found a lot of them to be a little bit specific with reds and blues, and using wild gauges.

I was liking the reverse gauges pictures for awhile, but I think I'll end up just going with replacing the lights.

Is the Original Set of gauges Tranlucent with Green Bulbs, or is it dull white bulbs with green tinted gauges.
I was hoping to just add Superwhite Bulbs behind the panel so it becomes a brighter plain white.

I'm looking to add some neons as well, but i have yet to locate any white ones in local stores. Street Glow is hyped up on line, but are there any other suggested brands.
i'll worry about the wiring later. : P

Thanks for any advice....

they are clear white bulbs with green covers on them. If you replace them with white, they will be white.

5x 194 superwhite bulbs is what you need.

^194 is correct-Just remember to not try and extract the bulb with your bare hands, get some gloves...I pulled my license plate bulb out with bare hands and the bulb exploded and left me pulling glass out of my index finger...I should have known better because the bulb was cloudy, but I was in a hurry, cause it was dark and starting to rain...

There's also a good variety of LEDS at http://www.autolumination.com They have some wedge-type LEDs that project the light in a broad range, so you can avoid the hot-spots that most LEDs will get you. I think LED would be your best "easy" way to get that crisp white you're looking for.

Wide angle LED's and even the matrix LED's do not disperse light anywhere near as evenly as incandescents do. You will still get hotspots in your gauges. Just go with the hyperwhites.

So ... what should I decide?

Postby Grant516 » Tue Nov 16, 2004 9:13 am

Just for the Speedometer/Stuff...

Superwhite Bulbs, or Superwhite Matrix LEDs?
... hotspots might look ok, as long as nothing is too dull.

Where-as the bright white may just be dull?

no one? anyone?

we have a few votes for White Bulbs... (I'm assuming Xenon White 194's) and a few votes for LED bulbs...

right now real bulbs are wining with LED's for everything else.
