2.2L to 2.4L engine swap

2.2L to 2.4L engine swap

Postby godoflint » Thu Dec 09, 2004 7:56 pm

Hey guys,

I have a 2000 solara with the 2.2L I4 engine in it. Reading around, I saw that they bumped up the displacement to 2.4L and power from 135hp to 157hp of the I4 in Solaras in the 2002 model. I also noticed that it was somehow boasting better fuel economy with the beefier engine. I don't really want to go to a V6. I'm not racing this thing, but I do want more "oomph" since the 2.2L feels a little lacking for a car of that size. Is that kind of engine swap possible, or would I just be asking for problems up the ying yang? I'm trying to do the things that I can to get my car dressed out and preform better (exhaust, headers, downpipe, CAI) without having to do something major like a supercharger or turbo.

Sorry if this had been asked before. I searched for other threads on the subject but I wasn't turning up anything useful.

your going to want to one of 2 things... 1) go to a V6 motor, the 1mzfe, which TRD makes a supercharger for and lots of performance parts.. (well not lots, but more than the 4 banger)... other option would be to go w\ the bigger 4 banger.. but I was going to do that.. id just save my money for another car
Parting out my car!!! great upgrades for sale!

157 @ the crank is very reachable for a 5S-FE motor even in an NA application. In fact Flatlander sells a pre-setup motor that does about that, if I remember right. It would also be a lot cheaper than a 2AZ swap, as you could keep all your other parts that you already have (ECU, Transmission, wiring harness, etc).

Edit: Ok here is a link. I can't link directly too the page. http://www.importperformanceparts.net/

Here is the information quoted from their site:

Reconditioned Block (maged)
Bored .040 over (2204cc's) w/Torque Plates
ROSS Forged Pistons (10.5-1 comp ratio)
Connecting Rods w/new bolts, maged & shot peened
Performance Wrist Pins
Plasma Moly Rings
Toga Main and Rod Bearings
Freeze Plugs
Comes Assembled and Balanced

With higher comp ratio and over bore, this motor should make 155HP!

This short block comes with a complete take off head.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

It's possible but totally waste of time and money. might not just sell your 2000 and get a 02 or 03. for 17hp gain, thats not worth the money and effort. the 17hp gain could be easily achived by some mods

the 5sfe is an extremely reliable engine. I got nothing but sweet things to say for my 90 celica (also used 5sfe) for 153K miles...then i sold it for 3900! Nothing wrong with it at all....you'll waste mulla swapping it, if your engine dies..then just swap another 5sfe (they are like 750 for an engine with less than 20K miles!!!!). If you wanting v6 or even a 2azfe (2.4), then just sell and buy again, would be cheaper that route!

okay i really dont agree with swaping to the bigger engine....for one the 5sfe engine is really reliable and yes ven though its a 2.2 litre and its really slow......there is much more parts available for that engine...they already have at turbo out for that engine...and secondly if you are swapping to that engine why would you go to a 2.4 litrie..its not much faster ( i used to have a gen 1 solara so i know) save the money and get a 1.5..or better yet a v6 and more to the engine....unless your willing to wait before they develop the 2az fe engine...which will be a while..

Just go and get a SDS Supercharger like I am later in 2005. Save the time of removing a ton of engine crap and just bolt this damn lovely cold piece of yummy goodness to your 5SFE. :D
