Oil change question - 5sfe solara's

Postby Jai_Jai_Binks » Mon Dec 13, 2004 1:55 pm

I've was chatting on other boards, and there the dudes told me to change the drain plug every few oil changes. And to use a new drain plug gasket everytime.

I'm currently at 55K miles on my 01 solara (5sfe). I've yet to change my drain plug, and my solara never came with a drain plug gasket (not that i don't buying buying either). But its been to the dealership a few oil changes (30K service - minor tranny service aka drain and fill) and then too the drainplug gasket was never mounted.

Hence my question, for those who do you DIY oil changes; how often do you change your plug and do you use a gasket?

Drain bolt doesn't need to be replaced.

I change the gasket everytime I change oil. It's needed if you don't want it to leak.

See thats what others told me at TN, but their cars came with gaskets from factory. mine new 5sfe never came with it. I do 99% of the oil changes myself (mobil 1 syn + toyota oil filters) and i've yet to see it leak. Also, a few times it did to go the dealership for servicing, it did get an oil change there during that time...and they didn't add a gasket there too.
Is the gasket a 1mzfe thing...and not a 5sfe thing???

Jon11582 - thanks i freaking out thinking it could have come with it, and i could have thrown it away.

Any more 5sfe guys here...can you tell me if you use it..

I changed it on a 5sfe before, it had gasket on the bolt. Just get one next time you go to the parts dept.

I could see why it would be wise to change it but I have yet to change it for the 5 years I have owned my baby.

ridculous. drain plug doesnt has to change everytime, just the the drain plug gasket has to change everytime. if you take your car to dealer for oil change, they should change the gasket for you. or you can buy it from dealer for about $99 each.
