Timing Belt & Drive Belts

Timing Belt & Drive Belts

Postby red2002solara » Sat Dec 18, 2004 12:32 pm

Hey all,
Monday my car is going in for some matenance. Along with new tranny fluid, rear brakes, and oil change, I'm going to have the timing belt replaced (Car has 65,000 miles on it). The car squeals when I start her up (have I4 by the way), and I know the timing belt is loose on it. Figure I just have them go in and put a new one in. I was asked about the drive belts, which I assume are the belts for the alternator, power steering, a/c, and whatever else). Do those need to be changed also at 65,000 miles? How long should the drive belts last? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, how much did it cost for just the timing belt replacement service. And how much to have both the drive belts and timing belts done together? Thanks!

P.S For the guy in the silver Solara who flashed and honked at me on 40th street in Phoenix, sorry for not responding. I was off in my own little world that day. But your car looked awesome!

The dealership where i took my 1mz for timing belt change, charged additional 36 bucks for changing
1. alterator belt (a $12 part)
2. a/c fan belt (a $12 part)
3. p/s belt (also a $12 part)

do the math, if you do the timing belt service, the other belts are just cost for parts and not labor! I did it on mine. Unless the dealership really more mulla for the other drive belts, then its your call...

inspect your belt. if there are rips and tears, then of course its ready to be changed.

there's no telling on belts, since each driver is different.

ES 300 Timing belt hours are about 6 =P It obviously is less, but, according to flat-rate, 6 horus is what you pay for. At our rate, it's about $500 + the belt, which is around $60, I believe (less for Toyota, since it's less mark-up hahaha) but we usually run the Timing belt service w/ the 90K (8.3 hours with t-belt, plugs, engine oil, tranny fluid, brake fluid, coolant, etc) which runs around $946 for the ES.

The drive belts (alt, p/s) shouldn't have labor charges if done with the Timing belt. They are removed when they open the engine to replace the timing belt, so they simply have to replace the belts when putting it back together. Start some crap if they try to charge for stuff like that!! I've had technicians try to pull crap like that, but I don't pay them for it =P
