Another Wheel Question

Postby piratemike » Tue Jan 18, 2005 3:34 pm

Hello Folks,
I am considering installing a set of 2004, 17x7, Solara wheels onto my 2001 Solara.I also will be installing a TRD 7 piece kit, and probably some lowering springs. My question is, will these wheels fit properly and what size tires would give me the same overall diameter? I think these wheels have a 50mm offset which is the same as the stock 16" that are on it now but, the 17"'s are .5 inch wider. With that being the case, will the additional .5" be toward the outside of the wheel? I woulf think so being that the offset remains the same so, the additional width would be to the outside.
Anyway, I would like to hear any opinions or advice on making this wheel upgrade.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

If the offset is the same as stock, that would meant that the width difference is split between the inside and the outside. With 17" wheels, you should be able to go to at least 7.5" wide. 7 is really conservative. Offset explained:

For a good tire diameter comparison calculator go here. It even shows you how different tire sizes will affect your speedometer:

Actually, I'm certain that is incorrect. Where did you get 38mm offset from?

Stock six-spoke alloys are 16 x 6.5" wide with 45mm offset.
Stock steels are 15 x 6" wide, also with 45mm offset.

No, stock 6 spokes wheels are 6" wide.

It depends on the wheel, I think. My 2002 SLE owner's manual doesn't give width. Web sites that sell OEM wheels seem to agree that the 6-spoke alloy is 6.5". Here's a few:

This one says 6", but doesn't have the 6-spoke alloy listed
This one shows the 6-spoke alloy at 6.5".
So does this one.
and this one.

One thing's for sure, the stock offset is NOT 38mm. Where are you getting your information? I don't care about being right, I just don't want to see incorrect information being given to somebody that needs help. If you can show proof beyond just saying it's so, I'm open to being corrected.

You'll need spacers for the rear. Im using 15mm H&R spacers.

The info was from back in the day when I visited this site and camryman.org.

Now I just took my stock rims off and measured it, it is 38mm offset.

Mike with 17x7's... youre going to need an offset of 45... this will give you room for clearance if you decide to drop your solara.

You can also refer to Kenny's wheel offset guide:
http://www.zer0.info/solaraguy/viewtopic.php?t=13755

Even if you try to keep your rims with the stock offset, the wider width would cause your wheels to possibly rub from the inside- not stick out... the lower offset would make it stick out

As far as tires, Id recommend the following:
215/45/17
225/45/17
some members have the 50's instead of 45's, but i think 45's are better

Just keep in mind to also lower your solara... keeping it at stock height with any aftermarket wheels just looks whack!! and if you ever post pics, im sure Milt and myself would jump on the pics saying to DROP THAT SHOOT

but heyyy its all on you man.... some ppl cant drop their solara cuz of CRAPPY roads... example: San Francisco

good luck!

You are INCORRECT, sir. With due respect, I don't know how you measured it, but it would be pretty easy to make a 7mm mistake if you're eyeing the center line from which it's measured. I just went out to the shed and pulled out one of my stock rims (the six-spoke machined alloys that come on the 2002 SLE V60). FYI, almost all OEM wheels have the size and offset information stamped on them somewhere. The stamp says "16JJ x 6 45". This tells us two things:

1) you are correct about the 6" width
2) the offset is 45

I don't know why I didn't think to do this before.
