Are there any mods/exhaust setups that have a drastic change on the sound even at idle? Or how is that accomplished...

Yeah, make it breathe more, especially at the throttle body. Remember more air in = more air out = different sound.

A machine shop can redo yours for 150-200.

2.5" is about right but 2.75 might feel more different. 3" would sounds louder and it might shift your powerband from low end to high end . this happened to my 9 240sx NA, which I lost low end power after i installed 3" catback system. But the RPM resposne faster and while it reach high end, the power was incredible.

So he did that so you would have more over lap to create a vacuum to pull the air in through the intake valves open or what? is that what advacing does? Or is this like ignition advancing ..... someone?

well, from what i understand about the 4 stroke engine, after combustion, the piston travels from downward pressure then back up while the exhaust valve opens to push out spent fuel.

by advancing the exhaust cam, the valve would open sooner, most likely when the pistons is closer to the most bottom point as opposed to stock cam setting which would open later, as the piston has begun to rise. He is getting more exhaust out quicker and most likeley giving it a 'meaner' sound

but im probably off in some way :o
