Upgrade path for 1.5 SLE V6 Auto

Postby 808_JMZ » Wed Feb 16, 2005 3:38 pm

After doing some research, I thought I'd post up my planned upgrade path. Let me know what you guys think:

1) gen1 tails (orange half circles?? wtf were they smoking)
2) Suspension: Tein/Tokico
3) Wheels: 18x7.5" Kazera KZ-A (Black w/silver lip)
4) TRD valence kit
5) Exhaust: Greddy
6) Injen intake w/extension or maybe just a drop in K&N
7) HID (not aftermarket)

8) TRD SC running a 6-8psi pulley (boost gauge, piggy, etc)
9) Headers

This will be on a silver SLE. Not sure if I wanna go to 8-9, but Im coming from a chipped A4 1.8T running 200hp/250lb-ft at 14.5psi 5spd, and the thing thats bothering me most will probably be performance, thats why I decided to do more show stuff first.

Get the TRD kit first since it's discontinued, then go for the SC, the other stuff is still available. As for higher then 4PSI, you're gonna need money to ensure you don't have probs in the long run.

That path is fine, but you are looking at around $10,000 worth of modifications not including internal engine mods to handle 8 psi. Probably better to stick with 5.5 max 6 psi.

As others have said, if you go over 6psi, expect to be breaking pistons. The ring lands will not hold up. I know, I tried and so have others. I even went 1 step further and was injectting water/methanol to increase octane above 93 pump gas. Check out my CarDomain Page #4 to see what happens to the pistons.

@ lazyboyz69, am I waisting my time? 8) -JoeB

8) As JoeB said, don't go beyond 6 psi of boost or you will have to reach DEEP into your wallet for repairs. You might want to stay with the pulley that comes with the sc. 8)

Someone said why would you sc an automatic, the answer is so you can a very damn fast automatic. I've got one and I don't back down from anyone and have yet to be beat.

5spd would be ideal, but I love my auto SC, even at 4PSI, it's more than enough for me. It blows peoples minds to see a family sdn move the way it moves. So no you're not wasting your time. Just have a good idea of what you want.

To answer everyones replies:

The SC is a long way down the road in my eyes, and might not even happen unless I get a good deal on a used one. I did try searching and I remember someone here saying 6psi is good for stock internals. Maybe they were wrong. I'll do whatever boost the engine can run with stock enternals. 4psi runs about 180 at the wheels? is that correct?

I've seen some SG members selling the valence kit, I will probably get it from one of them, so I'm not too worried about not being able to locate one. I guess I should put that before the suspension/rims. I just dont like the look of a raised car with a kit.

For the HID, what I mean was using hella/philips/osram brand stuff, not the kits you see on ebay. One of the things I loved about the A4 was the HID, so I wanna keep that. I've seen people selling rebased philips bulbs, which is what I'll probably get.

For the tranny, the gf needs to drive the car and she is really afraid of driving manual, which is one of the reasons why I'm selling the A4. I would never go back to Auto if I didnt have to, I love driving manual. Also, whats worse than a auto car is a slow auto car. and like hsakuragi said, finding a 5spd solara is hard, esp in Hawaii.

Hey 808Camry, you think I can come by and check out your car before I jump into a Solara? I would also want to see what a Auto SC would do. For your time you can take my 1.8t for a ride, its fun and i havent sold it yet.

i'm not saying s/c auto's are a waste of time.... it just you can go so much faster with a manual.... according to everyones 1/4 mile times.... everyone with an auto s/c has beat my manual s/c.... :x roughly with the same mods...
