cruise control problem

Postby solara2200 » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:15 am

Well today I was trying to use my cruise control on my 2001 2.2 solara. I turned it on and set it. I let go of the accelerator and it started to slow down from 70 mph to 65. I was like wtf? :-? After about five seconds of letting go of the accelerator the car reved up to about 4000 rmp. Obviously it dropped to a lower gear kind of like turning off the over drive on the freeway. After 3 seconds of this, it returned to its normal ~2000 rpm. While still decreasing speed. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. I tried doing a search but nothing came up.

If i were to guess, your not used your cc too often, when going over a hill, the car mph dropps a tad bit and the car automatically downshifts to bring it back to speed...once the speed is attained the car upshifts and normal rpm's are attained, its all OK, i travell 65 miles daily on cc, I see this happen 2-3 times a day at the very least. If your cc didn't bring your speed back to where you set it, then there is a problem..otherwise what you describe is indicative of cc going over a hill or a steeper incline

Your right I dont use my cc to often, but the problem is that this happend
on flat land. I know what you mean when going up or down a hill, rpm will change to keep the speed constant but this is not the case. My speed just decreases as if i never pressed on the accelerator and/or set the cc, and will probably slow all the way down.

then i could be these:
1. You accidently touched cancell on your cc switch (ie. pulled it in your direction)
2. You could have depressed the brakes
3. Check your brake fluid (yeah, as odd as this sounds, this was the cause for my discovery of the same problem) - apparently my cc was disengaging on its own...then when i paid attention i learnt that whenever the "BRAKE" indicator came on in the gauges the cc was automatically disengaged...Mind you my brake fluid (DOT#3 or better) wasn't empty, just a tad bit low...the "BRAKE" indicator in the gauges wasn't on all the time, just while turing or going over bumps, turning and inclines. Check that.., otherwise
4. Something is definately wrong with you cc.

Thanks Jai for your input;
I made sure that I didnt cancel the cc by pulling the lever to cancel and also never pressed on the brake to cancel cc either. I checked the brake fluid level and it is topped off, so this is not the problem. I guess its broke, but how if i rarely use it?
