K&N drop in or Injen... Which do you prefere?

Postby DatSRBoi » Mon Mar 14, 2005 5:59 pm

Which do you prefere? . I was told both will give about same Hp, Both legal, Well known amoung the solaras. But which do you prefer and why? I heard injen intake sometime still causes issue checklights while K&N still somehow cause restrictions. Then I heard injen ram air gives high ends and fully legal while K&N gives all the low end still and cheaper...So whats your point of view? Why I ask this? My intake is acting up and my carback is making my air intake flow uneven. So I must quit this Ebay crappers and decide. Yeah Ive looked and searched but this is kinda different from all the other postes...Just help a brotha out..

Both give you mild gains.

But the intake will give you grunt.
CAI will give you more than either.

Injen wont give you a CEL if you install the tubes right and tighten the screws and clamps. The high end pull is addicting, and the gains feel more significant since you really hear it. For the Injen, your going to have to eventually replace the filter unless you get a round K&N for that too.

The drop in is far less work to deal with and cheaper though, and good for life, It also retains the stock quietness.

If your eventually going to do stuff like Exhaust or catback, I think the Intake will give higher gains. If your just going to stick to non-performance mods, The drop in will do.

The most significant difference is the price and noise though. Do you want to hear your engine's power, or do you want to keep the peaceful overisolated cabin that toyotas are known for? I hated the extra noise for the first few weeks, but now I cant drive without it. The choice is yours.

I want the engine quietness. But im running on a catback tanabe G medallion. Will dropping this K&N cause any CEL? Also I took out that extension on the factory Box. The part that runs into the engines front bumper, not the box. I've been getting allot fo CEL lately with both factory box with non-performance filter and the ebay ram intake rigged with obx cone filter....I want both high ends but prefere more low end since The catback tooked all that low end away badly.

I also only have 150 bucks...So yeah...

I went with the drop in K&N.
No hassel and I thought I heard a small difference.

I just hit 100,000 last Wednesday. OUCH! No more warranty.

Is the Injen + CAI extension obnoxiously loud? I like the smooth sound of the engine as it is now (though my K&N drop in gave noticible growl at higher rpm's). When my friend put a CAI on his maxima, he could scare birds out of trees just by revving. I will be installing my cat back soon and I am tempted to upgrade my intake now too. I am not supercharged.

The CAI doesnt change the sound characteristics too much from just the intake. The sound is a bit deeper, but not much different. The intake is much louder than the stock airbox though at 3-4K RPM+

Its not very loud unless your at full throttle alot. The louder sound makes you feel more "connected" to the car though, if that makes any sense. Full throttle doesnt feel the same without an intake.

If your still not sure, I say just get the drop-in. Its much cheaper and easier to install.

Thanks for the input. There is mean sounding, and then there is just plain loud and ricey. I definately do NOT want the latter.

I've got the K&N drop-in filter. I chose that over a CAI for several reasons:

1) A LOT cheaper - $35 vs. $200+?
2) Easier. Unclamp, take out old, drop in new, clamp.
3) Performance gain of a CAI vs. drop-in is negligible (this ties into the price issue as well)
4) No CEL or airflow problems

I can vouch for the sound difference... the K&N will give you a stupid-ass grin when you first switch it out and yet still retain the quietness. Fuel economy goes up - a little - and you have more low-end torque than stock.

Will a CAI give you "more" power? Perhaps... another 3 HP over the K&N? 3 horses isn't worth $200 in my books. I could buy mad weed for that (kidding!). Get the drop-in, save the money for some silverstars, or an HID kit, or whatever. Take your lady out for a night on the town or something. Or buy mad weed, if that's your thing.

I have had all three, K&N drop in Short ram and CAI.

The drop in is a mild gain NO CEL
the short ram is a mild gain over the drop in but you can feel the power decrease when the engine warms up. NO CEL
the CAI is a moderate gain over the Short ram NO CEL and I have the Home brew one. Also the CAI kicks ass in cold NY winters

so the order is from my esperience and yes I have also had the ebay one

Ebay<Stock<K&N<Short RAM<CAI
