I'm guessing this won't have a dramatic effect on an NA vehicle, correct? Seeing as I intend on scing someday, I'm in on a gb...

Jim's fuel kit

Postby PDX SuperSolara » Thu Mar 17, 2005 1:43 pm

This fuel system upgrade would probably not have much of an effect on non-boosted applications. I've sold many of them and the response has always been that it was well worth the price; even on cars with just 4 psi boost it has made a dramatic difference and has solved all fuel system related problems. Those people who have had to replace knock sensors have had to spend $500-$600 or more and without proper fuel delivery you will just blow one or more again. Many people have spent many hundreds of dollars on fuel pumps and fuel injectors that literally made the problem worse. You don't have to. That's worth something.

Now I admit that if you take your fuel system apart, measure everything up, drive all around town piecing the parts together yourself, you will save a few dollars, if you can even find the parts you need. And you are going to find out that those aluminum fittings are not just a couple dollars each. Sure you are paying a little for the lack of having to do that and having sent to your front door the exact set-up that has worked perfectly for many others.

There is a reason things cost what they do. It is usually because it is worth it. This is one of those things that is worth it. Now a Starbucks coffee you pay 3 or 4 dollars for when they make it for 25 cents is not worth it.

I thought $200 was expensive also. I started calling around and getting prices to build it myself. First of all, I couldn't find 1 place with all the parts. Second, I wasn't able to save any money. The cheapest I came up with was $240. I wasn't picking cheap fittings though so I'm not saying that it couldn't be done for less.

There is 1 part of the stock fuel system that if you saw it would sell this easily. It's the part on the back fuel rail that goes up to the front fuel rail. That is SO restrictive. I agree this kit probably wouldn't do much for N/A vehicles. I have a lot of respect for Toyota engineering and believe that the stock setup is fine for N/A engines.

For the person that asked if this could damage the engine, no. Even on a N/A engine this is a good quality setup and can only improve fuel delivery. Again, I don't think you'll see a difference on the N/A engine but it'll work fine. On a sc'd engine, I think this is a great idea. I forget the exact numbers but I want to say I had a 17% difference in fuel from the front rail to the rear rail. I did a combination of Jim's fuel lines and modifying the fuel pressure regulator to 59psi. -JoeB

For S/C engines, do Jim's fuel pressure regulator mod, it's FREE!
Writeup is on Camryman's Passing Lane under the Solara forum.
I stand corrected by JoeB, mod not for N/A engines.

For an N/A engine, I would not do that fuel mod. The 43psi from the factory is a good recommended pressure. It is also the pressure the rest of the fuel system was spec'd at like the fuel injectors.

The reason to do the fuel pressure regulator mod is when you have a boosted application. The stock fuel system is fine for no boost but when you start hitting pressure rather than vacuum, it works against fuel delivery. You need to increase fuel pressure accordingly to keep up with the pressure. The more boost/pressure, the more you increse the fuel pressure.

The Risk:
If you haven't done anything to increase the air into the combustion chambers and you now increase the fuel pressure, you will increase the fuel delivery. The ECU can correct for it and will automatically. The problem is, you've now changed the balance of the system. If you check on an OBD2 scanner, you'll see the a negative correction for a rich condition expressed in %. If you imbalance the fuel delivery too much (around 18% I think), it will throw a CEL. This means that the ECU is not able to correct it far enough to deliver an optimal fuel ratio. Since it should have the ability to correct for normal changes like altitude, it will assume something is malfunctioning.

Realistically, it might not be enough to quite get it past 18% to throw a code but why imbalance the system at all? That mod is really meant for boosted applications. -JoeB

To support Joe I thought 200 was a lot but much so I called jim and he pointed me in the right direction. You might save maybe $20-$40 but the hasstle of putting it all together and having the right tools to secure everything is not worth it. Trust us old timers when we say its a good deal if you got $200. This is not some cheap accessory kit, its a real deal performance mod.
