Y-Pipe

Postby Fletch » Wed Mar 23, 2005 1:36 pm

Sorry I don't have the #'s to back it up, but for biggest 1/4 mile improvement go for a custom cat delete y-pipe. It may be a bigger bottleneck then the air intake because the rear bank has to come forward to meet the front bank. That type of design is for low end torque which you don't really want for drag racing anyway.

I have noticed that I am able to shift quicker and more reliably from 1st to 2nd with the high flow y-pipe also. Not as much back pressure on the engine. My 2nd gear synchro is a little beat up, so that 1-2 shift used to like to grind at me every once in while, awful sound.

Just swap back stock to pass emissions if neccessary.

I agree with Fletch. The stock Y pipe is a huge bottleneck. Climb underneath your car and look at it, and you'll see what we mean. Getting bigger exhaust piping without addressing the Y pipe issue won't get you much. You can also look at headers, but then you're getting into a lot more money.

The other issue that people have raised is your fuel delivery. I'm surprised that you haven't had knock sensor problems. You need to get an S-AFC or similar piggyback system, as well as Jim's fuel mod and bigger injectors to go with your fuel pump. Without the S-AFC, though, you don't have any means of increasing the fuel to match the extra air you're getting.

Paladin06Greg is selling a high flow cat from JP Performance..... would this do a great deal of improvement?

I'm pretty sure it'll be a bit more louder and allow for more exhaust exit flow

It will help, but only partially. The bottleneck is at the Y pipe, which is before the cat. The purpose of a high flow cat is to keep from slowing down the exhaust gasses. If they're already moving slowly because of the restictive Y pipe, the high flow cat isn't doing you much good. Some people who've replaced the Y pipe have had good gains even with the stock cat.

I recently installed the JPP y-pipe. I love it, it feels like it evens the flow out. Definately recommended.

So if I went with Y pipe and my catback tanabe but left the headers stock. Will it waste more gas and will I feel the gain? Or it would be useless since I still have the header on? I notice lately with the catback only, I feel the major lost in torque..SOOO badly that when I have 3 extra people in the car at a light. It feels like Im trying to tow a huge boat. It got soo slow. I need my torque back up.

My custom Y pipe gave me mid range power.

But then again my engine was not really stock.

For torque gain, use your stock air box and a higher flowing filter and take the intake resonator box out.

Going with things like headers, Y pipe and freer flowing exhaust will probably make you feel like you lose some low end torque. That's mostly because you get rid of most of the backpressure from all the restrictions. You more than make up for it with better mid and high end power gains.

so i hear that you dont want a lot of torque for the 1/4 is that true because you'lll get a lot of wheel spin.... but i kinda want a quick launch for the 60 ft... i figure the hp will kick in too late for the 1/4 mile... i just dont' know what to do... you think injectors for my car will do good also.... my friend with a b16 turbo said he got 5hp from better spark plugs... he just got it dyno tuned...
