Update: I finally pulled it off at the cost of a burnt finger. I took it around the block a few times and noticed the car responds faster at lower revs. We'll see how it does on the freeway. Special thanks to DocJohn for finding such a cool trick up our cars' sleeve. Hope you'll be able to find some more hidden potential in our cars!

Glad this worked for you (and sorry you burned your finger). The main improvement I've noticed is from a standing start and at lower speeds on the street when you hit the gas, but it seems a little more responsive at highway speeds too.

That's cool, I'm glad that works. Who knows when Injen will start selling. :-?

The whoosh sound of the intake is much more audible now (in a good way). I wonder if the same could thing could be done with the Injen intake. We gotta see June's!

Good thinking, but there would be no need to do this with Injen intake or any other AM intake. Any AM intake for our cars does away with the stock air induction system and that means no IAC valve #3 at all (as seen in the photos of June's Injen prototype). The only part of the stock intake it appears the Injen set-up uses is the MAF sensor.

Thank you for greta pictures of the instant mod. I was wondering where you got the 5/16" hose and plugs. Thanks

I think you're mistaking the ACIS for the IAC...

ACIS = Acoustic Control Intake System

IAC = Idle Air Control

I am glad to see someone else decided to try this modification and took the time to reroute the vacuum lines to make it reverseable. I should have taken the time to do it this way but no going back. I have had no ill effects from doing this and my mileage has not changed at all. The intake noise gained from doing this mod is minimal at best. Don't forget to remove the secondary filter or noise reucer located in the upper air box it is certainly restrictive. The increase in performance is measurable. Especially on the bottom end.

No mistake. IAC also = Intake Air Control. I got this straight from the manuals.

Good to know you're suffering no long-term ill effects from your mod. Your mod to the intake system paved the way for this idea so I appreciate your pioneering efforts.

I have tried this mod and haven't noticed anything. The mod took literally 30 secs. and maybe gained 2-3hp. Whether I did or didn't, I wouldn't notice a gain or lack of one either way. Good thought however and thanks for sharing. This may be more effective with more mods. Who knows. It's a shame they can't produce an open element filter for us. It's taking so long, it's ridiculous.

I've gotten about 50/50 feedback (half say it works, half say not really). I guess people have different expectations and perceptions of what this mod will do. Even a gain of 2 or 3 hp for free isn't that bad. Although I think the decrease in throttle lag is the biggest plus IMO.
But as soon as someone offers a good AM intake system, I'm ready to buy it and scrap this stock set-up.

Intake Mod

Postby PhreakdOut » Sat Apr 02, 2005 9:22 pm

This works great. At first, I thought it had to be my imagination. (Harder on the throttle, cooler temps.) After a few days, I'm now convinced the sluggish acceleration issue is gone.

Thanks to All who supported this.

I agree that the throttle lag has decreased quite a bit. What I noticed most was the bottom end acceleration.

I never had a nasty catalytic converter odor at any time, so I wouldn't have noticed a difference, but I'm glad to know that this mod has also fixed this problem for you. :D

Also, with more folks reporting their results here and by PM, I can now say the results are very favorable with over a 4 to 1 ratio of reports of positive performance improvements after making this mod. While this is hardly a controlled scientific study, it looks like this mod works.
